Its gettin very hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel lately........
Anybody feel like not signing on? I'm having a hard time with the decision to stay in, but what to do if I don't? I'm not liking the direction that my career, which is to say nowhere, or the df, is going lately!!

(not trolling just wondering how the rest of yee feel)

It's down to you whatever way your career pans out.

Do some courses that are challenging or that you are interested in. Remember, you need to have certain criteria completed before they will offer you to sign back on. People don't always get offered.

Maybe stay in and do a few courses that may benefit you in the real world before you go.

I'll give you the advice I give everyone considering leaving.

Have you a better job to go to?
It is it Taxi/security/door work then stay put.
Only leave if you have a better job lined up on the outside.
Civvy jobs love some DF courses. In EMC, a huge percentage of the IT types are ex DF (Sigs or NS)

The DF won't lay you off.

Maybe things might go my way this year but at the minute I'm thinking of taking the door at the end of my contract!! When I joined I saw myself doing 31 years, at the minute I struggle through each week!!

Have you a job lined up? i.e you start work the day after you leave the DF?

Well don't leave because you are in a rut.

Just like goldie says, you would be mad to give up a paying job in the hope of getting another one. Who says you won't be disilusioned in your next job.

We have all been in a rut but we bounce out of it?

How long are you in, are you in an active unit?

I know a fair few lads that are giving serious thought to either not signing back on or else just going on their ticket.

Depending on your Corps you'll be hard pressed to get courses that will stand to you in civvy street.

Yeah I also know a few. Mainly young guys with no mortgage or kids or else lads who already have 21+ done.

That's true but that's why I was wondering what type of unit he was in.

Either way, a PTI course wouldn't be a bad one to have.

Stick with it, Civvie St. has got f*ck all and very little to offer at the minute mate. try to ride it out unless you have a definite job lined up. Trust me there are many out here who wish they were in your boots right now.

I've a while left till my contract is up!! I'm extremely interested in a pti course, although I'm also extremely interested in doing an NCOs course too which I'd have to do first when I can get on one!!

Have a look at other Arms/Corps of the DF and see what's out there. If you don't have a trade or a specialism in the unit you are in now, try the Air Corps as it has a lot of special trades that are scarce in the DF, such as Air Traffic Control, Fire Crew, aircrewman, safety equipment specialist and others. Don't just sit there waiting or you'll do yourself out of a job.

    What the rest said.

Ive two mates who arent in a long time but have already transfered between services to get better courses (better as in they were more interested in the courses the other service had to offer) have a look at that approach. theres nothing in civvi street - i should know, thats where i work - unless you are sigs and have significant IT experience.

Cheers for all the advice I suppose I'll have a long hard think, I've got time, hopefully courses etc will go my way this year and my interest will be brought back to life

Also there is a Traniee Tech scheme run for Engineers every year usually, and there are other schemes run by Signals and Ordnance, maybe keep a look out for them.
