To be honest with you I'd either get a pirated version online or buy it legally online for cheap. €150 is way to much for it for 3 pcs.

If you need word you have to buy or rent it.

If you need something that's near enough for most purposes then www.libreoffice.org is free.

Had a quick look on microsoft's site to see if I could price copy of word for Ireland , but gave up 'cos it wasn't on the first few pages and besides there was the whole licensing issues of Office 365

The file type (.doc) is the important bit and almost all versions will open in other applications, if you want to be 100% sure, get a free office solution (like Libreoffice mentioned or OpenOffice) and a free Word Viewer from Microsoft.

If you want to be completely sure that all the formatting and everything is perfect, you could create a PDF (Portable Document Format) which will mean it'll open the same on every system that opens it.

This site has everything you need to compare.

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-ie/buy/compare-microsoft-office-products-subscription-plans-FX102898564.aspx

I'd then keep an eye on Amazon, they normally have good deals or go to a local PC world. They were selling Office 2010 at a reduced rate and you get Office 2013 for free.

*** OLD TIME GEEK ALERT ***

Back in the day, WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) was the be all and end all for software & printer makers, you could have a lovely document on your word processor and once you printed it it would lose all the fonts, printer & font makers really drove a lot of the development forward, then you had packages like Lotus 123, Office and the likes that were all made to work with the fonts and printers, then thanks to M$ fantastic licensing model Office took off as the standard Office suite for businesses and Works for home, no-one could get close to them really until the Open Source movement got involved, Open Office and LibreOffice are just as good, if not better in some aspects.

It's also good to remember that the inventors of Excel never patented the idea and that Access 97 was included as a license software from someone else, that's why there's a huge difference between Access 97 and 2000.

doesn't skydrive give you an online version of the ms office app, might be worth trying word on that if requirements are basic

That's a good point - I had a look at mine. Word, Excel, PowerPoint are there. Should be enough. All the features you need are there.

if you save as .docx then everyone with new copies of word / openoffice / libreoffice can read it. People with old but genuine copies of word won't be able to.

if you save as .doc then everyone should be able to read it.

NB. this only applies if you don't don't do fancy , otherwise the correct formatting may only be seen by peple with the same version of word.

If you save as pdf then everyone should be able to read it

pdfcreator on sourcefourge will allow you creating pdf's from any app that can print

    This.

If staying in the MS camp, then a free skydrive account will give you an online version of word, saving docx files as well as printing to PDF's which you could also email. PDF is quite universal too.

Google docs is another good alternative as is Libre Office.
