What's the sentiment here on gorse burning? Just curious.

Pain in the backside, draws a lot of attention, ruins a lot of hills. I expect someone will go to jail sooner or later. Fire brigade and NPWS out around here lately.

But is it arsonists or people burning off unwanted gorse, and having the fires get out of hand?

If fires get out of hand you are talking about a 1500 yo yos bill from fire brigade. Was talking to a man this eve who saw a gorse fire earlier today that seemed to be getting out of hand......no sign of 'arsonists' around either.:o

No problem with it as long as it's for a valid reason and conditions for burning are followed.
Problem is that the window for legal burning is too narrow-Sept to end of Feb. Usually the good dry spell necessary for burning comes in March.
There needs to be a rethink on the burning dates with some flexibility to take advantage of the times when it is possible to burn. A problem caused by the current policy is that a huge layer of dead gorse and grass builds up over the years and when someone burns, you get intense fires that damage the soil and become so hot that they carry burning debris across fire lines into forests. Lack of burning has also altered the flora in areas such as allowing heather to get tall and woody and making it useless for grouse.
Gorse has a fire resistant rootstock and will come back, but burning is a way to keep it in check and help reclaim valuable ground.
For a prosecution, the NPWS needs to catch someone in the act of setting an illegal fire or an eyewitness.

I dont think anyone is able to keep a gorse fire in hand when everything is this dry and this wind from the east is not what people are used to burning in . I just dont think its worth burning a piece of furze bushes when fires can change direction and get massively out of control in minutes , thats why I call them arsonists .
Its the same couple of plebs around here that always start burning moutain when the weather is good , they have good land that they dont be half as worried about  I think its an addiction with them

Fires running mad last night everywhere I looked towards mountain. There was a helicopter taking water from a lake and dumping it on the fire.
I heard of an eejit last week that was burning rubbish near his empty silage pit, the tyres for the pit went off, a trailer load of tyres followed, and a nearby electricity pole with wires and whatever attachments also took off. He was close to loosing several pallets of fertilizer as well, but the firebrigade managed to stop that. There were 2 fire brigades, a multitude of neighbours, a couple of lads that work for the ESB and someone about hazards there - that will be a serious bill for a stupid thing to do.
