    Noob classic importer question!

Looking at a W123 in the Uk, first registered in October '83. Am I right in saying that If I was to bring that across now, Id pay VRT based on emissions? Plus there is no chance of letting it sit in my garage til October before registering it as it HAS to be done as soon as it enters the country?

The difference would be a minimum of 500 quid, which is a lot considering the car is sub 2 grand!

No, it's based on OMSP with a minimum of €720. In October it'll be a flat €200.

You could bring it in, store it, and then pay the fines and it would still work out cheaper AFAIK..

Plenty of W123's for sale over here and quite a few earlier W123's for sale over there too.

Yeah, but that is actually based on emissions, i.e. 36% of €2,000 for a car that falls into the highest emission bracket.

I just googled W123 and saw this absolutely beautiful car. Sorry to go off topic.

Just go on to Done Deal and you'll find plenty here already - no point in giving Revenue any more than they'll be screwing you for soon with house tax etc

Thanks lads, I think Ill keep my eye out for a car thats definitely over 30 years then. I can't justify throwing out that kind of cash when its that cheap to start with. Didnt realize the VRT on 30+ cars was up to 200 now either. If Irish governments were as imaginative in other areas of policy as they are in all matters of motor revenue, what a country we would have.

I'll check out Irish market then too.

edit - As everything 1980 onward now has to be NCT'd, would a car with a long MOT be any kind of gauge for having a happy experience at the test centre in here? Im not automatically expecting an MOT'd car to walk through our test, but Id he hoping I wouldnt get a fail sheet as long as my arm either...

you'd be OK 99% certain. Just write out a receipt with a date post 10/2013 as the date you bought it They will accept that

Is it not based on CCs with a car that has unknown emissions figures?

No. For a car with unknown figures, the rate charged is calculated as the highest VRT percentage, i.e 36% of market value, i.e. no less than €720.

So, technically, it is based on OMSP, at a flat rate of 36%? Like I said? :P

    Technically, yes ;).

But if you can prove that your car emits less CO2 and falls into the lower VRT rate, then you will be charged less for the VRT, accordingly ;).

:D I wonder how I'd get on with that LPG 200 I was looking at...

The fine will be 20 cent a day so over 6 months that's only 36 euro

You would not get on with it at all, I'm afraid :p. The same way I tried to argue about my old 123T that I imported few years ago (photo below). I was under some sort of impression that Revenue do understand terms like "capable of running on pure plant oil" = CO2 neutral... That did not work and after a couple of years I sold the car, as I was getting sick of paying the mad tax for it. However, I am still sorry I did ...

Gas :P really, Revenue could get a fair price off punters if they had any intelligence between them in there , but like Big Phil they just go in bull-headed and alienate everyone and end up empty handed :P:P:P
