How do you use your 18 hole handicap in a 9 hole competition?

I understood that you used your handicap based on the index of the hole - basically if I am a 30 handicap and have 2 shots on Index 1-12 and 1 shot on 13-18. Then if I am playing 9 holes I just go by the index on the hole I am playing and calculate my score the same as if I was continueing to play the 18 holes.

What way is it usually done?
