Smoking at Dublin and Gatwick

We will be traveling to Orlando from Dublin (terminal 2) with airlingus and virgin atlantic via Heathrow next weekend. There will be a three hour gap between flights at Heathrow. Both my parents are smokers and will be looking for somewhere to smoke from the moment they enter Dublin airport. If we know for certain that there are no smoking opportunities between the time we enter Dublin airport, pre or post US clearance and boarding at Gatwick then it will be of great help to them.

Given the amount of time between the flights at Gatwick, would it be possible just to leave the airport through security, and then go back in afterwards with passport and boarding pass in hand? (I'm assuming that we will receive both boarding passes at Dublin from either the airlingus check-in desk or a kiosk of some sort).

You won't be preclearing in Dublin so you can walk to the Garden Terrace in terminal 1 once through security.

As for Gatwick, you can go out and come back in but just check the security line as you go. You'd probably have to head back in at least an hour before your flight to be sure.

Once you check in at Dublin, go up stairs to the fast food/bar area and there is a balcony off the bar where you can smoke, don't know about the rest.

Will be not be doing the US preclearance thing at terminal 2???

You can only do preclearance in Dublin when your flight is a direct one to the States. If you connect via London, you cannot do preclearance.

    Not in Gatwick I'm afraid.

    http://www.gatwickairport.com/faqs/at-the-airport/

    Q:
    Can I smoke at Gatwick?
    A:
You can – but only in a very few places, each clearly marked, and all outside the terminal buildings.
This means that there’s no smoking once you’ve passed through security, so there are no smoking facilities for passengers connecting from an international to an international flight either. It’s not just Gatwick that has strict rules on smoking – the UK has been largely smoke-free since 2007, when smoking in any public, enclosed areas was banned.
The smoking areas are marked on the terminal maps available on our airport information pages

I suggest you buy yourself an electronic cigarette for the trip to allay any cravings. Many airports in the UK do have smoking areas airside but Gatwick are over the top in their clamping down against it.

Thats in terminal 1 though and the op says he his departing from T2. As far as I know there are no smoking facilities after you pass security in T2 but you can walk from T2 to T1 (after security), but I believe it is a long enough walk.

OP you mention that you are connecting flight to Orlando from Heathrow and Gatwick. Could I ask which one it is out of curiosty only as I believe there are no smoking facilities airside there also

It's EI 232 landing at gatwick shortly after 10am connecting to virgin's VS-15 departing terminal S at 1pm.

Yeah, there's no smoking area in T2 at all, which means a decent walk to the T1 area at the bar. Give yourself plenty of time to allow for that.

But E-cigs are allowed/sold in some of the T2 shops, maybe they'd put up with one of them rather than nothing?
