Moregrass seed

There's been a few discussions on different brands/varieties of grass seed over the years. Normally we go to the local co-op and by whatever they have, without any consideration to the suitability of the seed varieties to soil type and heading dates. Last batch I got was very dusty, on closer analysis there seemed to be a lot of empty husks in the mix

Going back two years a few lads, Reillig, Chippy and one or two more, had tried Moregrass seed. How did ye get on with it?

I got a bag of Moregrass coated clover last year, i mixed it with a grass variety and used it on a reseed. I got Zero up take of clover. Very disappointing, but it could be something I did as well that was the problem. Either way I will not use again as its too expensive to take a chance

I used mg60 three years ago. I broadcast it with the fertilizer spreader after my first cut of silage and chain harrowed over it. I applied some p and k and it is doing really well. The seed is very aggresive and was quick to establish itself. I tried doing the same thing last year on a different field but it did not take.( maybe it was the year that was in it).

It is designed for intensive silage systems and is high n sugar. If u make silage from it you will notice a big difference in just how quick the cattle will eat a bale of it. At least twice as quick as they would eat a regular bale of silage. So u might want to make provision for this. Yields from it are highest n spring.

i reseeded about 10 acres with moregrass seed last spring, cant remember the variety but it was a silage grazing mix, its was spread with wagtail, was over thru it today and have to say it has come much better and way more even that kerry seed i used previously and spread with seed barrow, will use again for next reseed

I used the mg60 and very happy so far. seed went in last spring and was extremely lucky with the way it took due to the weather. i kept light weanlings on it until december and went back over in Feb. Nice enough cover on it at the moment and seems to be growing well compared to any other ground. I Only spread fertilizer on it today and so far i am very happy with it. I will be doing an autumn resseed this year and more than likely will be going with it again. The only question i have with it is; will it last?

    MG 60

6.50kg Banquet II Hybrid Rye Grass (tet)
    1.30kg Lactal (inter tet)
    2.60kg Stefani (late dip)
    2.60kg Blog (inter tet)

I think the hybrid rye grass is meant to last for at least 4 years.

I would advise extreme caution to be sowing a sward using 50% hybrid ryegrass. No way would I do it unless its exclusively for silage. Will grow well for the first year but it is no way competitive among other species and hard to kill at the end of it all

Totally agree I think people will be disappointed with this mix as will have to be reseeded regulary judging by varieties. This is a three to four cut mix IMO.

Include a good few kgs of red clover with hybrid rye and you will get super feed from a silage only sward and no N needed

My neighbour is at that but last year with no heat really tested it. That said the silage quality was excellent however there's very little grazing value in it.

I dont cut silage (says he offering advice), I had red clover in but I got turffed out of the land after a single cut when land owner died after reseeding a few months earlier:rolleyes:

if it out and out silage (4 cut system) I would be going for red clover and either hybrid ryegrass/or one of the high yielding rye grasses

if it was for one/two cut system I would be putting in just a delicated grazing mix if trying to achieve over 75dmd

Most depends on the management of the sward.

No dedicated silage ground here. IF I were seeding I'd look for hybred ryegrasses.
I would look to have Tyrella and Cancan included. They will provide early and late grass for 4th???? cut.
My ideal mix would be Navan-Cancan-Tyrella-Abermagic you get silage early and late grass growth.
Quiet honestly there is a lot of talk by salesmen about dedicated silage mixes, I think any mix that can withstand a dairy herd stocked at 4lu/ha would do any job you want. There is only one fly in the ointment that being late heading dates.
