I have to buy one of these and found them online. There are 2 types available, 1 for a 1.2 6 valve engine and 1 for a 1.2 12 valve engine. Part is the same price but has a different part number. The problem is I dont know which engine is in the car in question, nor does the owner!! I presume I do need to select the correct part or there wouldnt be the option available??

Can you ask the owner to open the bonnet and read the engine code off the sticker or maybe send you a pic of the engine?

Or even check the log book and read the power output.

Power output is the same on both according to parts website, a massive 54 bhp. Its an Irish car so its prob the 2 valves per cylinder model cheap rubbish. I'll get the number of her mechanic and give him a call before buying it for her

It's the engine code that you need. You can get this in various ways.

    1. Ring your local VW dealer and give them the registration number or chassis number. They'll give you the engine code.

    2. Open the boot. In the wheel well there's a white sticker. Look for the 'Motor Nr' it'll have a 3 digit code which is the engine code. An identical sticker is in the inside cover of the service schedule book. The same sticker will also indicate the engine's power output in kW.

    3. The VLC will have the engine code. The customer will have this document.
