So I wake up and I cant sleep again for hours if I do go back asleep at all. Im really tired but on the other hand Im afraid to fall asleep because its a nightly thing.

Im on my own with two young kids so maybe that has something to do with it, can someone please help ??

Its a very common occurance, sleep paralysis. There is nothing wrong with you.

Once you realise this is a physical phenomenon, hopefully knowing there is nothing to be scared of will help you relax. But do acknowledge the sources of stress in your life, and maybe look into ways of tackling them.

OP, like what the other poster said it's probably sleep paralysis and it's very common, particularly if you're stressed and going through upheaval. I've been through it and know how terrifying it is. I used to dream that I was asleep and couldn't move and there was a shadowy malevolent man dressed in black in the room watching me. I would try to turn on the light but was never able to do it. It seemed like the man in black was draining the electricity and that's why the light wouldn't come on. I would get this dream over and over again. The dream stopped when the stressful situation was resolved.

If you're stressed talking to your GP might be beneficial but I don't know if benzodiapene type sleeping tablets would help you (most prescription sleeping tablets come into this category and they can make nightmares worse). There's a product called Melissa which you can get in your health food shop. That might help you sleep but only use it as a short term solution.
