Tension between two dogs...

    Hi all,

I am having an issue with my two dogs (both spayed bitches). Younger, larger dog (lurcher) well mannered and gets on great with my older dog (medium sized terrier mix) fine about 90% of the time, usual playful mouthfighting and wrestling like most dogs do. Happily sleeping curled up together etc. Lately though she's showing a lot more dominant body language and at times is almost chasing the other dog around the garden. Hasn't come to bloodshed and I don't think it will but had to bring the older dog to the vet recently to investigate patches of hairloss. After bloodtests etc. came back clear the vet suggested it could be stress related. Older dog seems to be isolating herself and avoiding the younger dog also. I'm at my wits end. I'd hate to have to rehome the younger dog but I can't allow the bullying to continue. She's smart enough to only do it when she thinks I'm not watching so it's hard to correct her behaviour. I can only assume this behaviour continues when I'm not home. Anybody got any ideas?

Separate them when you`re not around its only fair on the girl especially if its stressing her out, you`ll have to be a bit on the one dominating now if she`s fine only 90% of the time, sounds like she`s chancing her arm/leg ;-) .
They will try their luck, I know my girl did, but I stuck to my guns from day one, hard as it was, now she`s a lovable softie (7stone rottie)
Just remind her that you are the boss!

Yeah, I've been looking into a large dog run or something to divide the garden but haven't found anything suitable that doesn't cost a bomb. Head's wrecked though, spent ages socialising the lurcher and doing obedience work with her since she arrived and she's come along great, very trainable. She's a doll apart from this issue. Like you say, can't leave them together, it's not fair on the terrier.:(

We got sheep wire and a few fence posts to secure the garden for our girl works out cheaper than a pen and gives her more space, if you are near one a farmsupply shop would have all you need for it, we live in countryside and the local store is amazing they have everything from a loaf of bread to cattle feeders and they are way cheaper than diy stores,
I can imagine your head is wrecked alright
