Luch single hander

Here's another new arrival from Minsk

    248058.JPG

The Luch one-hand watch, powered by a tiny 15 jewels movement originally developed for women's watches (and to my knowledge the only mechanical movement that Luch still make).

    248059.JPG

With a diameter of 36 or 37 mm it's just about wearable on my wrist as it's mostly dial. Lug width is a generous 20 mm, the supplied strap is horrible, shiny gator style plastic.

Size and strap don't matter however as it's going on a different strap

    248060.JPG

and on a different wrist :D

For the short time that I was allowed to handle it (to put the new strap on it) it didn't leave an overly bad or cheap impression. The case is chromed brass of course, with a stainless, pressed back, so no water resistance to speak of.
But it seems well made, the chroming is good and the print on the dial is crisp and clear and the hand meets the indices fully, making reading the time fairly easy.

All in all, not bad for the roughly 40 quid it costs ...easily affordable if you just want something different and/or a cheap way to test drive the single hand concept before you shell out for that Meistersinger or similar.

That is a lovely looking watch....and 36mm would go well on my wrist. Methinks I have identified my next cheap and cheeky purchase. Cheers!

This is how it looks inside ...lots of empty space :D

If you are interested, the project team on the Spanish Forum HdR are just starting to design a Luch custom watch to be made in the factory in Minsk.

No dial colour has been decided yet or dial text

It will be around US$30 + shipping

Here is a rough draft so far with the traditional logo

Cheers, but I ordered the single hander last night! Now to convince the Mrs that this is a recession proof purchase.

..in the same price bracket as the Luch, I'm trying to source a quartz movement, white faced 'Vertis', at the moment. Proving difficult.

Only found one seller so far, I'd rather a buy it now. Wrong colour too.

The ultimate single hander in my opinion is the Botta UNO 24 h

    346826d1303419478-die-entschleunigung-der-zeit-botta-uno-24-botta01.jpg

    but that is

    a) fairly expensive (mid 300's usually)
    b) a bit too imprecise for making it to work on time (10 min intervals only)

and if you go for one of their 12h variants (which is only marginally cheaper), ya might as well just get the Luch

I've had a hankering for a Meistersinger for a while now and this only makes me want one even more!

There's one major complaint I'd have about the Luch ...for a handwinder the crown is awfully small, not designed for sausage fingers like mine.

But I guess they can't put a big crown on it or the torque from the big crown and long stem would yank that tiny movement right out of the watch :D

That's a very cool watch peasant. Would you be able to link to the place where you bought the strap as I wouldn't mind changing the strap of a Seiko I bought a few weeks ago.

I had a single handed watch a good while ago, about 10, or more, years ago. Think it was a mondaine. Stopped wearing it after an incident in Temple bar of a Saturday morning: feeling a little tired and emotional, walking around the food market looking for yer man that sells coffee when a gorgeous woman approached me, long flowing silken hair, deep dark eyes, and asked the time. I unveiled my watch and just simply couldn't tell what the f*ck time it was; had a complete freeze first by trying to work out how many minutes were being pointed to but then, as a growing sense of embarrassment took hold and time ticked away, I began struggling to even decide what the hour was ... to or past ... and eventually I just looked up and said "I don't know".

She smiled and walked off and I never wore the watch again. True story.

They made one model only, I think. Impossible to find new now. Odd that they just stopped making them. Did you get in touch with them.. :D

My package from Minsk arrived today. Unfortunately the Mrs intercepted it so I had a little explaining to do.
But none the less, the package has been released to me and my initial impressions are that I like it. Like it enough to keep it for a while before moving it on.
I must have smaller fingers than Peasant as I don't have a problem winding it. The watch is pretty light though and the strap is not the best, but I reckon I will leave it on it for now.

Interestingly one handed watches always reminded me of analog type pressure meters. Interesting design, but on the con side you have to have a larger case to provide enough space for the single hand. On a smaller case it would be difficult to read the minute (ie. where is the hand exactly between the hours.) On the pro side the very same reason might be good too as larger cased watches are more sought after now days.

Those Luchs are now also available with a black dial and with the far nicer old style cyrillic Luch logo
