Make sure you keep an eye out for Alan Dunbar at The Masters next week

He got in by winning the British Amateur Championship. Yesterday he defeated the US Amateur Champion 1-up in what is called the Georgia Cup

The latest is that he plans to turn pro after The Masters so therefore he'd have to withdraw from the 2013 US Open. Another star to emerge from the north? I watched him last year in the West and he had no caddy, presume he's sorted for next week :pac:

Quality player... They churn out so many top notch golfers up North... Have been for a long time also...

Even looking at the West allot of the guys in the knockouts where from the North.

I always think it seems like that in championships, but the last 8 last week included Gorey, McGlynn, Macnamara, McDermott, Hume, Dawson.

2 of 8 were from the North.

It's still is, and possibly always has been, the strongest province though.

I remember Brian McElhinney qualifying for the masters back in 2006, I heard a story of him being on the first green, taking his first putt and just putting it straight off the green, just a whole new level of toughness.....it would be an amazing achievement to make the cut....it such a tough ask for a rookie no mind an amateur.

It's all experience. Hopefully he gets some big names in the draw for the craic and keeps his first putt on the green

I'm guessing he'll stay in Georgia for the next week. His win yesterday will be a massive confidence booster. It adds an extra level to what is already going to be a very exciting 4 days

Interesting - guy is going pro after the Masters and only started playing golf 7 years ago when he was 16

Thats like Greg Norman.. Took up the game at 16 and was scratch by either 17 or 18... Natural talent and I imagine a strong sporting pedigree (and starting with the right habits)

Amazing if he can even just get into the weekend.

    Hi,
As far as i can remember he had a go at qualifying school last November and didn't do well. If he goes pro he will have to rely on making enough money in the 6 events he gets into to get a card for 2014.

I remember watching him in the 2011 Walker Cup in Aberdeen when Britain and Ireland beat the Yanks and if I remember correctly Dunbar reminded me physically of Shane Lowry and he accquitted himself well.

The star of the show however for me was a very small Scot or Welsh golfer, I can't remember which, who just got stuck into the Yanks in both the singles and foursomes.

What I enjoy most about the top amateur golf is that for most of the round they could almost be on a par with any of the professionals around and then all of a sudden they play a shot or make a decision that the average sunday swinger would attempt and it then goes pear shaped :) Human after all!!

Think that it Rhys Pugh you are thinking of, don't think he is anything to Denis on Sky though.
