143000 on a 9 year old car (Corolla) would it be expected that things would start to go when the mileage is so high? I do 20k miles/annum myself

Service history is key. I'd rather buy a car with 150k miles that has been well serviced that one with 50k that hasn't been well serviced.

at the risk of being a fanboi, that corolla is only just worn in :pac:

seriously, if it has a service history and you look after it, there's no reason why it wouldn't do that mileage again. that said, the first vvti's weren't toyotas finest moment so i'd really want a service history to consider it, they're a popular car so there's no real reason to settle for a high mileage example.

I have a 99 Landcruiser, there's 230,000 miles on her, not a bother with it. The aul fella has a 98 VW transporter with 530,000 miles on it! I think the last major job he had to get done was the water pump, not a big deal really.

I think it just depends more on how it was looked after rather than the actual mileage figure.

A bit too many miles for my taste. Might be too many for you if you have to ask...

But it really depends on the car and the price.

On a diesel it's nothing, I had a diesel Megan with 300k on it I sold it for a few hundred euro and it is still being used on a daily basis to this day. On a petrol it's a little different but as the other poster said service history is key. Only thing I have noticed is the higher the mileage on a petrol the more petrol it may use with wear nd tear, on a diesel it seems to stay the same ? Maybe one of the mechanics around here can tell me if I am wrong ?

530 k ! Nice, it ows your father nothing. Good for the environment too some other manufacturers could have had 3 cars scrapped in that time.

I have a 5 year old diesel not far off that, should be there by end of the year. As others said, service history and no signs of abuse.

Mileages are rising in general in Ireland now that clocking isn't as rampant as it used to be, so go on condition and feel rather than miles. 143 k on a corolla should be fine.

The seller has uk service history for the first 3 years but I've requested receipts from garage for the work done since. Apparently serviced every 6/7k miles but not going to believe that unless I get the proof. Toyotafanboi, hard to find a good example, I'm around the west, most corollas seem to be over priced, abused or high mileage. I really need a car ASAP have been looking a long time. I nearly got caught out last week, was looking at a car all seemed relatively ok with the car, seller claimed he was a mechanic, brought to a garage in Limerick (recommended from one of the threads here) turns out the car had loads of problems that the seller had tried to cover up, boy did his back go up when the mechanic questioned him about respraying both sides of the car and using filler, he denied everything of course.

    Edit; it's a 1.4 petrol

The woman's Corolla has 195000m on it and she doesnt even look after it at all (and hasn't for the past few years)! Its still 100% still so if theres ever a car Ill trust with for reliability its a Corolla!

The chap might be doing mainly long spins, I'd say on 20/30 mile runs at 60mpg you'd see the guts of 50mpg handy enough.

    A mate has a Corolla.
Never seen a car abused as much. Over 200,000 miles on it - and to be fair truly the most reliable thing I've ever seen.

I've driven/ drive many cars none so far are as relaible.

    140,000 - she'll be perfect.
As for serviced every 6,000-7,000 miles I'd say its the truth (based on nothing at all) even if it's not it doesnt matter as I said there very reliable (he hardly bothered ever servicing his - often just servicing it on a whim and it being well over the recommended rate and it never complained...

I have it on my iPod fuel app. I used to drive the crap out of it and get about 38 to 41. now I drive like a granny and I get that the mpg I said above.

point is though that even with high miles you can run a car cheaply and economically if it's looked after

most of my journeys are min 25 miles and keep the revs low and speed slow

One last thing service history's can be faked phone the uk garage before you buy and ask them to check their records, any old mot's ? Be carefull.

Make sure to check the underneath for rust, even though it's not much of a issue in Corolla's I have seen some uk imports with rust on the underbody particularly where the rear springs meet the body of the car.
