Opinions welcome on this production .

all done at home , I played everything apart from vocals .
Song written and sung by a good mate of mine

drums are played on vdrums using SD samples ,
cymbals are real and miked at same time

    bass is a jazz DI'D
    guitars are via gsp1101 .

if your wondering , the song is about Imelda Marcos and her Husband who she embalmed and wheeled out on occasions :pac:

Catchy song & nice clean mix. Has a real late 70's / early 80s feel to it. Nice job melding the vKit with real cymbals - works well. Big snappy snare sound too - I still struggle getting the snare to really cut through, but have been relying on the Waves plug-ins to do most of the work for me.

I like the syncopation with the bass/drums/guitar. I think the bass sound could do with being beefed up a bit (prob just personal preference)

There's a tambourine in there which sounds like it might be out of time? Could be just me.

All in all though, sounds pretty good to me.

Had a listen to this the other day...
Kick sounded flappy, and the bass honky - all throaty with no low-end umph.
Thought the drums were overly busy in places.
There's timing issues through-out, and the guitars are very flat sounding.
You've got everything sounding quite seperated, but I think probably too much so.
It's not gelling together, but then, until the timing of the performance is spot on, that's going to be hard to achieve anyway.

    yeah id agree

i think the tambourine is slightly out in some bits , possibly some bass.
they were one take jobs , so prob need a little more tightening

i think the drums need to drop in level abit and bass more low end , less growl

drums a bit busy alright , got a bit carried away ;)

part and parcel of learning to do it all , you tend to overplay if the other elements arent in place properly already ( bass, guitars )
which i why i usually leave drum takes till last - but not this time

so in terms of seperation and 'flatness' - do i need more verb / delay / openess of some kind ?

Dunno if I have anything worthwhile to offer on the mixing side, but just a thought on the drum timing...

When I was using an acoustic kit, I used to really struggle to nail an entire drum take in one go. I just couldn’t get a 100% performance from start to finish. There was always a fluffed fill, lazy kick drum, snare pop or something else that ruined it.

What I love about the ekit is that I can just put the drums down in sections: verse, chorus, mid 8 etc (same as a guitarist/singer would). It’s quicker & I get far better & results because I’m able to really think about what I want to play for each section. Also, sometimes after I’ve put the rest of the music down, I might find that I want to change a drum accent/fill to suit the arrangement. I can easily redo just the relevant section.

Since you’re using real cymbals, this method is much tricker to get right. I reckon that by switching back to e-cymbals, you’ll give yourself a lot more options. Not only will you have to spend less time on your cymbal sound/micing/phase etc... but you'll also have much more flexibility for recording & arranging the drums.
