Importing a car from UK - what documents do I need to get from the dealer

    Hi

I am bringing in a car this weekend from England and am just wondering what documents I need from the dealer.

Is the registration documnet (V5???) sufficient for the tax authorities here?

On the VRT site it mentions needing proof of shipping - what exactly is this?

The reg document, a bill of sale (even if handwritten on a bit of scrap paper). As for the proof of shipping they mean the ferry ticket.

And make sure you get the full V5 document from the seller and not just the tear off bit at the bottom.

Do I need to get an export certificate for the car?

If you get V5C, then you don't need export certificate.

Thanks Cinio. Is the V5C the full verison of the registration document and not just the slip?

Yes it's the full V5C. A lot of sellers in the UK don't know that you are supposed to take this document with you when you buy the car. They think they have to fill in the export section and send to the DVLA but this is incorrect and will cause you delays when it comes to VRTing your car.

If the seller does not believe you then refer them to the DVLA website.
