Saorview works on stb but not on Saorview Approved TV

    Hi All,
Need some help with this one as I'm a little confused. My sister in law purchased an LG 37LK450U from store a year ago with the promise that it was saorview approved. I've installed a new cable from existing aerial in attic to this TV but I cannot receive any channels after running scan on TV. She already had a STB from another room so I plugged that into the cable and it picked up the channels no problem. My first thought was that the TV is not saorview compatible, but according to the saorview approved website the model number is approved.

When I go to the input screen on the LG the input for antenna is greyed out, usually meaning the cable isn't connected, yet when this same cable is put into the antenna port on stb , it works immediately.

Could the TV need some kind of powered aerial or is it just not saorview compatible? We've been in touch with the store who have in turn contacted LG who say this set is Saorview compatible.

Any help or info is much appreciated as I'm at a loss to explain!

    Thanks in advance

That set is Saorview approved. I have the 32in version. Its possible that it is the aerial is the problem. Are you sure she has the correct type. Could she pick up TV 3 & TG 4 with the aerial before Saorview came on stream?

The aerial seems to be feeding the STB with no problem.

OP, have you tried a factory reset of the LG tv? What was being viewed on it up until now?

Yep had tried factory reset, same result, no channels at all, she has skybox in that room so that's what she was using before . Not sure about tv3 or tg4 picture before hand, just bought a meter to check signal from aerial maybe that will help?

Are you sure the TV is scanning for digital channels when you try to tune it in?
The TV may have been set to analogue only.

And this is "Auto Tuning" with "Antenna" selected?

Yep it says DTV when it's scanning

Tv can't be set to auto tune analogue only: on auto, it will find all signals on the aerial feed.

Have you tried it in the room the STB came from?

Not yet but I will, can't see it making any difference though

No difference, but to add some more detail, in the attic where the aerials are, there are two types of aerial one looks like a VHF and one looks like UHF, they are connected together into a combiner box which feeds the existing cable. Not sure if this adds anymore information. Another thing I noticed is that when I connected a splitter (maxview 4 port powered) I didn't get any signal on either the existing saorview box or the lg tv, brought the same splitter home and it works fine at my house. Is there any way that the saorview signal at my sister inlaws house is a different frequency than the normal?

you have to have a UHF arial VHF is no good, they look very alike, believe me i had the same problem,i could'nt get tv3 with the VHF and when your setting up make sure your arial is pointing in the general direction of the mast.Good luck with it ,it drove me mad trying to set it up.

Suggest you remove the VHF aerial and combiner from the system to reduce any unnecessary signal losses, the VHF aerial is no longer required is is only taking up space. Connect the UHF aerial to the existing cable.

The splitter (amplifier?) may be overloading the Saorview STB hence the reason for no signal on this but doesn't explain the problem with the LG.

Can you test the LG at your house to rule out a problem with it.

Found the issue , i put the meter on the aerial , seems the signal was just at 50% , which I guess was good enough for the STB but the LG TV was a little fussier. Moved the aerial to get a better signal , now 80% .Removed VHF aerial and combiner and now splitter works too. Everybody happy ! Thanks for all the help guys.

Strange the tv didn't see anything, maybe it doesn't even look unless the signal is above a level that allows a margin against failure.

Particularly strange if the LG didn't pick up a peep with the signal at 50%. Most DTT tuners should be able to operate normally with signal strength as low as 40% as long as the signal quality is above 55 - 60%.

Before switch over, on a good day I could get a poor broken up signal, on my Sony Bravia from Clermont Carn with the signal level as low as 24%!
