VW DSG Transmission

I see on HonestJohn website that the Chinese are forcing VW to do a massive recall on their cars, due to DSG problems (reliability and safety issues).

£600 million is the estimated cost for VW. The other car websites / magazines are keeping very quiet about it. Don't want to upset their advertising income, I guess.

The Chinese might force VW to produce reliable cars yet.

Yes I have been saying they were in trouble here for ages in the U.S and China and fair play to the Chinese.

In the U.S and China failures were so rampant that they were forced to offer 10 year 100,000 mile warranties. It just isn't as obvious here because there are far far fewer DSG's.

We do get the crap end of the stick with warranty's in Europe.

The same happened with Audi's Multitronic, they thought they could get away with it. The Multitronic is pretty sound now though from 2008 on.

Expect to see no mention of this in the mainstream Irish press, or the likes of Autocar, Auto Express, Car Magazine, and especially What Car?, the world's most unashamedly pro Volkswagen Group car magazine known to man. And to think that What Car? is supposed to be aimed at the average Joe as opposed to someone who actually likes cars....

Would this include current (2012/2013) build models or are we talking about the original DSG autos when they were first introduced back in 2004ish?

It includes mainly the 7 speed DQ200, but a lot of problems world wide were reported with both 6 and 7 speed DSG.

From reading more, it seems the problem is a lot less in Europe.

The geographical thing is puzzling. Are the faulty DSG boxes made outside Germany?

    From Honest John

"...abnormal vibrations, loss of power and sudden acceleration in cars equipped with the company's dual clutch transmission technology."

Sound like typical Asian driving to me :pac:

This whole thing kind of reminds me of the obama admin having a go at toyota a few years ago.

Chinese gov afraid of VW group sewing up the chinese car market?

....I didn't realise that DSG had gone to dry clutches - what a dumb idea. Ask anyone with a Ducati - even they have gone to wet clutches.

Constant engage/disengage of dry clutches brings big heat (and noise). Heat often brings warping. This would explain vibration (to me at any rate).

China has a far warmer climate than most of Europe, so I suspect this to be the root of many things.

I would imagine the dry plates mean lighter and cheaper boxes. Plus less maintenance..

You said it: lighter yes, but the key: cheaper. cheap-cheap.

Not only is there no oil, then they don't have to worry about keeping that oil in, either (leaks, contamination etc).

It's the good 'ol race to the bottom, as usual.

Mind you, if it costs them €600m to compensate...........it'd have been cheaper to stick with the wet-plate system............

    http://http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Volkswagen_Group_factories
VW have four factories in China, two of which make gearboxes.
So considering this recall is limited to China, there's a good chance the faulty gearboxes are Chinese sourced.

Otherwise I'd expect countries with strong counsumer rights organisations like the US and Germany would be calling foul too.

Honest John recommends against buying a VAG car with a DSG gearbox. He has been giving this advice for a long time now. Based on their track record.

The problems with DSG gearboxes are not confined to China.

    Aha - now that's different.

Is this a case of falling on their own (Chinese-made) sword, then ?
