Is there any difference in tax between a 07 Golf Gti and a 08 Golf Gti?

When I type in the number plates into motortax.ie I am getting the same rate (710 euro) for both.

    Is this correct?

Cars first registered in Ireland between 1st Jan 2008 and 30th June 2008 had the option of going on either system, whichever was the cheaper. Most if not all GTis and other high emission cars were registered before 1st July to stay on the low system.

OK thanks for clearing that up. Cheers!

I always thought 08 D cars meant cheaper tax.

A post 30th June 2008 first registered Irish GTi would be automatically on the emmissions based tax system which is a lot more than €710 hence why 2008 or newer hot hatches are rare.

Of course the counter argument is that a GTi on the higher emissions tax system should be cheaper to buy because it is less desirable.

i never new that always though my tax was expensive for a 1.6 2008, maybe not,

    C02 ON 1.6 ZAFIRA , co2 175,

    C02, 171 - 190 €750 416 211 62.50

    ENGINE SIZE, 1501 - 1600 €514 285 145 42.83

So if im reading this right, under c02 would pay €750 a year,
under Engine size €514 a year. (well. still expensive)

The only thing that would explain that is that your car was originally registered after 30th June 2008 where it didn't have a choice of which system it could go on. It automatically went on the emissions based tax system.

...of course the counter counter argument is that if it didn't qualify for low emissions tax, it cost a whopping lot more in VRT ......which makes it more expensive...........which means............etc :D

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Actually, a late 2008+ MK5 GTI based on the emissions is €750 a year instead of €710 a year so its not that much of a jump. Go to carzone and type in the reg of any 2009 one you find on there into the motor-tax webpage and you will see this :).

Good to know, I thought it was much higher due to their rarety from 2009 onwards. The MkVI GTi was lower again afaik.

Nope, its the same. I just found one on carzone (2011) and it was in the same tax bracket when I typed in the reg. 171-190 apparently. Its all down to the emissions and not their rarety anyway.

The new MKVII might be cheaper though. Its supposed to be capable of 6L/100KM so it might be lower on the emissions.

According to volkswagen.co.uk it outputs 139g as a manual so 280 Euros a year, and with a DSG 148g so again only 390 Euros. Might see a few more of them about

Can someone with an early 2008 car still decide whether to go with c.c. or emissions for the car tax based on which is the lesser annual charge? This is an original Irish car so it was registered as a new car here in early 08.

No, it is decided for you.
