a fear of big ships

    I know, a strange one!!!!

I've had this huge fear of big boats/ships since I was child. Cruise liners, ferries, tankers, cargo ships.

It's a fear of being beside their enormity. Once on board then there is no issue. The quicker I get on board the better.

It's a horrible feeling that I just have to look away from them and pretend that they are not even there.

The worst was going on a trip down the Liffey and out towards Dalky on a speedboat. All the ships moored along the piers down the Liffey freaked me out. I just had to compose myself, head down, deep breaths and stay calm.

    Anyway, that's my one.

A friend at work is afraid of balloons. It's very funny!!!!!

A fear of big ships doesn't sound to bad to be honest. They do look scary some being alien like ;)

I'm not afraid of big ships at all, but I am afraid of wind turbines. To the point where I hate looking at them. They are just abnormally large to me and so disturbing looking, especially when in motion; being near one makes me feel extremely anxious. I think it's a size issue, because I also absolutely hate massive bridges (and particularly the thoughts of standing under an arched one). Very strange.

I think you 'hit the nail on the head' there with your take on things. It's a size issue most certainly. But I must say, things are certainly getting a lot more easier for me as of late! I'm not as nervous about ships, maybe because it's summer time, and I'm around them more often perhaps? Spending time near water etc....

Wind turbines are certainly massive structures. I can see why you'd be nervous!

That's great you're feeling much better about it! :)

Yeah, it's a strange one...don't know why or when this fear developed. I happened to tell my brother about it the other week and he found it highly amusing and baffling. He actually had a video on his phone that he took recently, of him standing in a field surrounded by a wind farm. There was a particular shot of him standing directly under one and it literally made my stomach turn when I saw it, I had to look away immediately. Sometimes I even find it hard to sleep at night because I keep visualising myself being about a centimetre tall standing beneath one of them that's spinning around. WTF!? If it's a size issue then why am I not afraid of big ships or big buildings?! Only wind turbines and arched bridges :p

why not imagine your self as growing tall huge until you stand up right beside them and reach out and stop it moving for a minute

That's the hard part. Easier said than done when you're trying so hard not to think about something :P

Because it's like anything, when you don't want to think of it you automatically do...and the worse it is, or the more you want to stop thining about it, the harder it is to think about something else. Well, that's always been the way with me anyway!
