My girlfriend was on that flight , they knew there was something wrong as they took off as there was such a bang. 10 minutes into the flight the plane dropped along with the air pressure people screaming and all that.
The captain then brought it back and landed it very roughly. Girlfriend now has a sore neck. She was then delayed 8 hours.

Ryanair fixed it and gave her a 5 euro meal voucher.

Ryanair gets a lot of stick about fast turnarounds, fast taxiing, etc to try and meet schedules, but in terms of the no. of departures their fleet makes each day, do they have a higher tail strike rate than other carriers? Or is it just that the press love to take shots at O'Leary (which ironically O'Leary relishes)?

Media is loving it..3rd most popular article on the Irish Times at the moment.

Hopefully some of the readers will actually believe this.
Tail-strikes are a common cause of aircraft damage

Nope they don't. It's the latter. Press loves it, people love it and usually Ryanair seems to love it too, except cases like this and the fuel crap.

No about the higher tail strike rate..

Yes about the press. If this happened in spain, there would be tons more reports.

Looking forward to the Daily Mail's take on this.

    Expect -

127 passengers experienced terrifying trauma as a Ryanair plane broke up on take off in Poland. The pilot decided to chance flying for 25 minutes before turning the stricken jet from the Irish airline back.

Furious holidaymakers had their weekend trip of a lifetime destroyed as they were forced to wait an agonising 8 hours in freezing Polish temperatures while airline chiefs in Dublin considered whether or not to send over a replacement plane to take them home to their loved ones yada yada yada......

One passenger told the Daily Mail, "There was an explosion type noise, and it was totally unsafe to fly. I know this as I consider myself an expert in this particular field, owing to the amount of Daily Mail articles I've read on Ryanair through the years..."

Girlfriend now has a sore neck.

Why? Did she grab a few hours sleep on a chair at the airport or something.

:D thats true. Whats worse is it was not enough to pay for the meal she ordered. Its still a scary thing. The flight was full of kids who were competing in Ice skating for Ireland.

I was wondering what people were getting mad about. For your information it was a team of ice skaters representing Ireland at competitions in poland that were on that plane, they went a week without injury taking part in competitions and the joke going around is that the only injurys suffered were on a Ryanair flight. Anyway everybody has already been back on the ice so we were not looking to make a claim, we are not that kind of people. If you notice my post i was saying we were more angry at the 5 euro meal voucher.

I was in Poland in December, €5 will get you a decent enough meal, i'd say people were more p1ssed off they didn't get a free bar and all the booze they could drink.

Interesting looking at this account, and the AV Herald report about it suddenly going cold - maybe the APU was knocked out by the bang? As the Irish Examiner article (http://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/authorities-launch-investigations-after-tail-of-ryanair-jet-strikes-runway-during-takeoff-227129.html) says there was no strucutral damage...

The APU is only used for bleed air on the ground for engine start. They would've been using engine bleed air once the engines are running so I dont think it is what you suggest

With a tail strike on take off the QRH procedure warns the crew "do not pressurise aircraft" (obviously in case the aircraft has suffered more serious structural damage), so its possible that they switched off the bleed air and the air conditioning packs (to stop pressurising the aircraft) which might explain why some people reported it suddenly going cold?

If you guys are interested i can get the other half to type out her experience. This report will be from somebody who knows nothing about planes.

A small latte will cost you the equivalent of €4 at Okecie Airport in Warsaw. Not sure about Krakow, but I guess it's much the same. Airport prices in Poland are not the same as prices downtown!

That'll be fine..it was just a tailstrike. I'm sure the IAA will publish a report in due time.
