hi i see alot of member here talking about how they use agfood.ie, but what are the advantages of it over filling in the forms and sending them in, im thinking of suggesting it to my father as i heard it makes registering calves easier but what else can you do with it and would you recommend it. he has a small suckler herd with about 14-15 cows and a bull and has around 10-12 calves every year so would it make much of a difference to farming on such a small scale.

you can look up movements in and out and make movements if the transferee is on agfood aswell, register calves which is very handy, look up your herd, print it off, also you can register your herd online and all movement willl be recorded autmatically

its just more convenient than chasing forms etc.
its nearly mistake proof aswell so you don't get those annoying letters from the dept because a signature or something silly is missing.

just be careful if your father is not computer literate and you have to start doing it for him!

he doesnt know how to work the computer but i live at home so will have no problem doing it for him if he decides that he wants to give it a go

ld recommend signing up for it, only disadvantage is you are doing a lot of the donkey work for the dept by loading up registrary details of a calf yourself.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

It is really useful, you can check stock numbers for any date, movements in and out and apply for single farm payment on line if no changes occurred from previous year ,no disadvantages

    NO NEED TO UPDATE BLUEBOOK

With the new tagging system requiring you to send in part of the tag, some of the advantages of registering calves on there is gone.

When the suckler scheme came in, you got €2 euro extra per calf if registered online. alas, that is gone now.

    One of the biggest advantages!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 346 ✭✭hurling_lad

Biggest advantage for me (apart from ditching the Blue book) is that when you are registering a calf, you only need to enter the dam's 4-digit tag number and her whole tag is automatically filled in. This makes the process quicker than filling in the full tag in the paper form but also, crucially, makes it very difficult to make a mistake with the full tag number. There is similar error-checking done on the stock bull's tag.

It's Very useful for looking at a cows past calving history.click on the cows number and you get a list of offspring.

If you also use the ICBf website, you can also look at the sire history for cows. This is very useful when using ai to ensure you don't inbreed by using the same bull on a cow as she was bred from.

Still needed for medicines isn't it?

But yes reducing the use of the book is good news.

If you are using the Bord Bia medicine recording book I don't think you need to keep the Blue Book for medicines either.

Hmm didn't know that, on Icbf you get good ancestry details, but nothing showing offspring details!

I have been using it since 2005 but I still register calves using ICBF form as I only had calves this year and last year. The last batch I sent away they made up some fictitious number for one of the dams and as I have the copy I can see that I wrote the correct number  I must ring them Monday and tell them have another look at the form I sent in so they can see their mistake :)

I just use it for movements does that mean that I don't need to update the blue book? What if a department man requests the bluebook during a herd test?

sure all movements are on agfood, once i mentioned agfood tothe inspector the other day that was 100% the only thing he wanted to see was that the withdrawal dates where right on the drugs i was using

    Hi All,

I just signed up to this. I will be buying about 20 yearlings now and selling in November. Seems like a handy system if I can scrap the fathers blue book. I remember before when we dosed we had to write it in the blue book? I don't see an option for this online. Anyone know what we have to do for dosing etc now when using online?

You are still required to record remedies. If you are bord bia approved you can just use the book they provide else continue with blue book. This feature is not on agfood currently.

Quick question here about agfood, chap bought two calves off the farm the other day, I'm doing the movement permit via agfood, it has an option to move to a holding, or a feedlot, I assume the holding is another farm which I want in this case, whats a feedlot?

yes do the holding option... you should have done the permit before he got the calves by right... think a feedlot is like for band b

Put in the herd number and if you select the feedlot option if its not a feed lot the farmers name will not appear. You should really do it before you sell as the farmer could be locked up and not allowed to buy.
