'06 Hyundai Santa Fe or '08 Kia Sorento

    Hi,

Just about to buy a commercial jeep. Looking at an '06 Santa Fe with 85k miles or a '08 Sorento with 80k miles. Theres about 1500 in the difference (kia dearer) and I prefer the Santa Fe to drive but I'm getting a couple of warnings about the Dual Mass Flywheel on the Santa Fe. Garage says it never gave trouble and has not been replaced. Can't feel any vibrations in it while pressed. Timing belt also hasn't been changed.

Should I just pony up the dough for the Kia? I know there is a DMF in the Kia aswell but there is a timing chain so I won't have the cost of replacing the belt in another couple of thousand miles and I mightn't have the cost of the DMF in the Kia (hopefully).

    Any advice?

You can face the cost of a DMF change in any vehicle, incl the kia in the future.

A few things of note, did you ask the dealer to change the T belt of the hyundai in a deal? Also, the fact the dmf has not been changed in the Hyundai isn't a good thing, its a bad thing, you want one with a new DMF in it.....don't let any dealer lead you astray on that.

also, you would'nt feel feel any vibrations in it while pressed, it when the clutch is "out" or up, you'll hear the dmf rattling away......they're pure sh!t those dmf's and hyundai parts are dear. .

to be honest, I'd go for the kia sorrento...i had one, never gave me bothers, and i worked it hard.

Thanks for the help and advice. I was saying that the DMF hadn't been replaced on the Santa Fe and I was concerned about that, I'd prefer one that had been just replaced. I've called 5 different Hyundai garages and all of them say "No, they don't give much trouble, €1750 incl vat for replacing DMF, clutch and bearing". It's not like they are getting anything out of it so don't know why they are all saying they don't give trouble while every other person I speak to says that the DMF goes in them every day of the week. A local garage have quoted me 1300 for doing it.

The kia is currently undergoing a conversion from a DMF to a solid flywheel because it was knocking. Kia is looking better to me at the moment but the Santa Fe drives much cleaner and is in better condition (as regards the carpet and interior). Don't know what to do!

The DMF in my 06 sonata crdi went at 200k km's/124k miles & cost ~ €1000 all in to change(dmf+clutch kit+labour), DMF ~ €275 onto the cost of clutch change. Hardly a deal breaker in my opinion. It will probably go in any car with one.
