Im thinking of building a stone fireplace in my living room in the next few weeks.

The wall im building it on is 4.8m long with a celing height of 2.6m and the fireplace i want is 2m long right up to the celing but ive had a few friends tell me firstly the fireplace of them measurmeants wouldnt look right in a wall with that width and secondly i have to build them to a certin size etc for building regs. Now i dont believe the building regs for one min but thought id ask here just incase .

One of the reasons why i want it so wide is that ill be putting a 50inch + tv in middle of it because dont really want the tv to sit flush with the sides of the fireplace or really close to it but now these people are putting me of building it now.

Can anyone tell me how much stone ill need. I know roadstone sells the stone in bags but dont know for how much or what sq m would be in a bag. I remeber being in roadstone and had a look at the cut stone and at a guess i would say they would be in 8-9inch thick.

I know id be able to cut them in half and build the fireplace but would a 4inch stone wall be able to hold a heavy tv of this size. The stone fireplace needs to sit of the main wall also because ill be running some inch pipe that ill be connecting to a stove because i dont want to be lifting up floors so i can connect the pipes to the cylinder.

Can't comment on the size, but thought I would chip in with something I have seen work really well before.

If you leave a square unfaced with stone where you are planning to put the bracket for the television, this allows you to recess the bracket in further and the TV will sit neater on the chimney breast. It also can help make a neater job of your services for hdmi cables, power, etc.

Also worth remembering that a 50 inch TV is only about 110cm wide (~43 inches). That leaves a good foot and a half either side on a 2 meter fireplace.

Any pics of what you suggest because i dont know what you mean.

Was in roadstone earlier and seen a fireplace already built and it was a really nice job thou they are looking for 250euro for 3.5m sq. Was expecting it to be cheaper than this to be honest. Ill look around and see if theres any other quarrys that sell it.

See the link below. Not exactly what I was implying, but see the recess where the bracket is located. Depends on the fitment you want, some people keep the whole TV recessed in line with the face of the stone. Where others just recess the bracket only as they can sometimes sit 4 inchs+ proud off the wall. Put having a small recess for the bracket only would mean that you wouldn't have to worry about drilling into the stone.
