    Be warned!!

There is a completely unmarked white speed camera van on Cork Street D8. Its parked up just after the Centra on the left if you're heading into the city centre. Its parked facing the direction of oncoming traffic and not the usual rear facing camera setup.

Uh oh! They might use you as a data point in a survey!

You're safe with this one as long as it's not an actual Garda van.

What do you mean? They're just recording data to see if that stretch of road is a potential money maker? ; )

If that's how you want to see it. The unmarked civilian vans don't issue fines or penalty points.

    Careful there!

Garda vans can be unmarked and marked. They can appear anywhere, at any time and issue a fine. This is entirely different to an unmarked GoSafe van. Those vans monitor traffic and do not issue fines.

There is a GoSafe zone near Cork St, however the Centra is not in it. As such its probably a Garda Van and will be issuing fines. The same Garda van was on Auburn Ave and at Liffey Valley today. GoSafe were on the Belgard Road. They've been busy today!

That's why I said as long as it's not an actual Garda van! Is there a way to differentiate them from the GoSafe vans?

Not really for the average punter. Except they are generally white, D reg and Ford Transits.

What are the legal implications of parking tight behind the van in the bottom picture if you were a big van/truck and you obscured their view - say you stopped to take/make a phone call for instance?

That is only for motorways and not national roads. I often wondered the same actually, I suppose the Garda could move you on but the go safe vans are operated by joe soaps.

like if i had a very big ford transit and i decide to park right behind one of these blocking the view ?

i doubt they could tell you to move.

if it were me id be a pest to these but not the garda, if i had the time and patience and a big van, id follow one around all day parking behind it after it just set up.

Could you also claim that they van is blocking the speed limit sign.

Those side markers are a standard feature on vans for legal reasons. They're there to show the vehicle's outline in low light conditions.

It's actually not that hard to differentiate the Go-Safe vans from Garda ones: the Go-Safe vans (marked or not) always have the roof-mounted pod for the camera which the Garda ones don't have.

    Otherwise, correct :)

But to be honest, doesn't matter a dime who it is if your speeding.

How far away do you have to be to be flashed?

    Check the bigger thread.

Off the top of my head, if the road is X metres wide then you can be flashed at Y metres away i.e. (X/Y) = Tan(22), where tan is the angle of the radar beam.

So for example, a road 10m wide, you would be snapped at a maximum 25m away (75ft).

Thats an approximation but I would consider anything up to 200ft away the 'danger zone'

Ah grand! They're quite easy to spot in the distance!:)

Careful with presuming they are easy to spot, they can be fairly clever chappies in the gosafes. Like the time I passed one driving into Dungarvan from the Cappoquin side, he was visible only when I got almost alongside as he was tucked in tight to a field gate.

"Presumption is the mother of all f**kups" thats what my great great grandmammy used to say
