Car Wash/Detailing query..

    Hey all,

I got my car valeted about 4 weeks ago by a professional valeter. Washed, polished, waxed etc.

The paintwork has since gotten dirty and it needs a wash.

    (1) If I wash it will I have to wax it after or will the new wash not disturb the old wax?

    (2) On some areas I'll need to get the wax completely off because I want to rub a compound into the paintwork to get some scratches out. What's the best way to get the wax off?

    Thanks

If you use proper cleaning methods and decent products the wax will be safe, I find after a wax etc the paint is easy to clean and should only need a quick clean, Use wax safe shampoo with a decent mitt and the 2 bucket method and you should be safe.

How do you plan on rubbing the scratches out? Id be wary of doing so if you are not familiar with scratch removal.

I have a few scratches all over the car so I bought a scratch remover product http://www.micksgarage.com/proddetails.aspx?pid=209405&pk=2DF1E and I've watched a few videos on youtube about how to do this.

But I need the wax removed from these few areas first, so I need to clean the area, then apply the scratch remover and then re-wax the area.

    To answer your first questions!

    1. Depending on what products the valet actually used; assuming he actually used a decent protection, wax / sealant, then as Shaunie has said, if you use wax safe shampoo (pH neutral), and the two bucket method, it shouldnt remove the finish that they have applied...but thats assuming. Sometimes they just apply a quick detailer type spray on product that will give a bit of shine and protection for a few weeks.

    2. To remove was is quite easy. Spray on a All Purpose Cleaner, a fairly strong mixture, or as you are going to polish it, wash the area with Fairy Liquid (not recommended for regular washing) and that will strip away any wax on the car.

Re: Stratch remover product - if the car has received a polish already by the valet person, then there isnt going to be a huge amount of improvement with that scratch remover. Certainly not without a LOT of effort. Most of those products to a good job of removing very light swirls and oxidation, and restoring gloss, but wont remove deeper swirls. They will contain fillers that appear to have fixed them, but over time, the polish will wash out and you're back to square one!

Thanks for the detailed reply Curran.

Not sure what the valet used on the car to be honest but I'll probably just wash the whole car, apply the scratch remover to the certain spots and then wax the car again all over, it might not work but I might as well try..
