    hi,
Due to family growth (twins arriving), I am buying an MPV and selling my car.
My Done Deal ad has been viewed nearly 200 times but not many calls.
http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4785362 (the ad is 4 days old)

Am I asking for too much?
    Is DoneDeal my best bet?
Feedback welcome but not too harsh :)
    thanks in advance.

Nice looking car but you are looking for main dealer type money for it. As a private seller you need to be a lot cheaper than a Skoda dealer so that people have an incentive to buy your car.

price seems to a bit on the high side for a private sale but seeing as the add is only up 4days I would hold out a bit longer and see what happens or are you in a rush to sell it?

Just a few that drew my eye away from yours.

It's a big figure you have on it but you'd usually get a few offers coming in on it.

Maybe highlight the fact it's not an ex company vehicle.

Just taking a quick look through adverts a lot of buyers will be drawn to the english plate cars goin for 10-12k

Also estates wouldn't be the most popular choice to be honest nothing against them myself. I'm actually in the market for one but the opposite end of things :(

Honda Accord 2010 2.2D for less than 15k

why should I get Octavia 1.6 if I can have more premium car for less?

That car is nearly 12.5K plus VRT of 4800 so is closer to 17.5 than 15K.

To be fair it's more like 16k+ for that honda and it's a completely different car/market.

What's the annual insurance on it?

If you are getting calls it's a good sign.

However if you don't turn calls in viewings you are going wrong somewhere.

To add to that I would have thought that the overwhelming majority of people looking to spend that kind of money will want to do so with the kind of protection they get from a dealer. €16k is an awful lot of money to spend on something when you have virtually no comeback after you buy.

It'd be handier to trade that in OP.

Op, have a look at a multimac system for the back of your existing car instead

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,985 ✭✭✭rocky

3 year old car, try 55% of the new price...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 66 ✭✭cb102

    Thanks all for the feedback.
I've reduced the price a bit. It's tough, as the car was €27k new less than 3 years ago.
Point taken on the Private v Dealer price.

I did look at the Multimac, great idea but didn't really suit my needs.

OP, its a nice estate, well minded and presented, if it were a 5k octy diesel, it'd be gone days ago, its just the way things are ...........but persevere......there is always someone for something, sometime.

To be fair to cb102, your actually not widely off the mark. However your price is far closer to the dealer average of ~€15.9k You'd need to be far below this to entice a private person to buy from you rather than a dealer.

Nice car, well presented/good pics and a detailed description.

But I think someone else hit on it.. a lot of people won't be too keen to hand over 16k for something with no comeback if anything goes wrong. That's assuming they have that kind of cash in the first place without a trade-in of their own.

My advice would be to investigate the trade-in allowance you'd get on it for the MPV and weigh that against what it'll cost you to sell this privately.

Thats a good point. Whats the private sector ceiling? I'm not sure I'd be too comfortable handing over anything near €16k

Personally (and I'm no expert) I would be going to a dealer (maybe not main, but someone responsible under the Sale of Goods acts) for anything around the 5k+ mark.

But I'd also have a trade-in that I'll get buttons for privately so getting something off a new(er) car would make more sense for me. I'd be wary about buying privately anyway myself as I'm no mechanic and have no access to one.

You could always chat to some garages and see if they will sell it for you and take a cut ? Might save some hassle and they will get a good bit more than you will for it. Why are you not trading in ? It's a very expensive car to sell privately these days.

I've 20plus cars on donedeal at any time, all priced keenly. Seldom do they sell within 4 days. Views don't matter a damn, there are tons of people who just look at cars online as they are added.

Don't fret. If I could turn my stock in 40 days may as well as 4 I'd be content.

That is a very good point made above actually. If your car sells in 4 days it probably means you let it go too cheap!

With any of our stock it would be sitting there for at least 4-6 weeks before we start lowering the price or taking any other steps to try and shift it on. You have to be patient, especially when selling a car for anything over €10k as that kind of money is not easy to come by these days with the banks being effectively closed for business when it comes to giving out loans.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,600 ✭✭✭Slutmonkey57b

Previous posters are all raising good points. 4 days isn't long enough to judge, but I'd be inclined to enquire about trade in values. I got a 4yo Mondeo estate last year with a bigger engine and automatic for 10k from a minor dealer, so I'd doubt you'll get the price you're looking for privately. Maybe not far off, but not the sane.

As to what it cost when you bought it new... anyone interested in good value doesn't buy new! ;-) The old adage about losing half your money when you sign the papers still holds true I'm afraid.

I think it looks great and despite what others have said I think good estates like these make a premium- if you need one you will find a hard time finding one that is not ex company or high miles. It has a good spec and the right engine, however the new model is just launched and Skoda have a very high spec Exclusive model of the old Octavia Combi with half leather etc, and which can be bought for circa 23k cash new today, with 3 year warranty etc and very cheap finance.

I think carzone is better for more expensive cars so I would stick it up there too, but I think you need to be prepared to accept at least a grand less than the asking price, good luck

This is it. If you could get a brand new model for not a whole lot more cash why on earth you spend 15-16k on a 3 year old model with no comeback. I know I wouldn't...

Thanks for all the feedback, very useful.
If you had an offer for €14,750, would you take it? I'm guessing yes :)

Depends how quickly you want/have to sell it. You may get more by waiting a little bit longer given you only have it up for sale 1 week but then again you could also be waiting months and end up selling it for a lot less. If you are happy to take €14750 then do.

I think Id be happy enough to take that offer to be honest. Depends on how desperate you are to sell, but if you wait you risk not getting another such offer, and if you end up trading the car in you wont get that much for it. Its up to you really.
