What sort of professional help should I seek?

    Hey,

So I've had a pretty horrific few years from a mental health pont of view. Multiple suicide attempts etc. For about a month now, I've been somewhat at peace. Not great, but at peace, and able to look forward.

However, I want it to stay that way, and I know it won't unless I get some professional help. I should be getting it for the last five years but it's time to actually do it now. I just don't know what exactly I should do... CBT? Counselling? See a psychologist? Given that it's not exactly urgent, but needs to be done in order to avoid falling back into hell.

    Any thoughts?

    Cheers.

talk to mental health professional e.g trained qualified counsellor.. get their viewpoint on the issues .. then discuss future treatment with other forms of theraphy (based on those issues) ...

I dont think anyone here is qualified to give you advice... but what advice i will give you .. is well done on 1. admitting you have a problem... 2. accepting that you need help 3. wanting that help.. You have great courage, strength, honesty and willingness. You are already half way there ..

Keep reaching for those stars!! you will get there ;o)

Before you go to a counsellor, you'll more than likely need to go to your gp, as almost all mental health professionals require a referral letter.

As someone who has dealt with mental health problems for years, I can tell you it's scary seeking help, but one of the best things you'll ever do. I'm now happy, healthy, confident and don't have any urges to do dangerous things, and am finished all treatment. It takes time, sacrifices, a hell of a lot of courage, determination and some tears shed, but it'll all be worth it.

Once you speak to your gp, he or she will refer you more than likely to a psychiatrist, who will help diagnose you correctly and get you started with the right treatment plan for you, such as counselling or medication or cbt or a combination. Best of luck, op. I know how hard it is, but you won't regret it. :)
