Urgently need info on hairdressing internships

    Hi all,

Trying to find info for my sis about training as a hairdresser. She is out of work for 4/5 months and wants to retrain as a hairdresser.

There seem to be a fair few hairdresser 'Internships', but if she got one, would her work experience count towards training as a fully-qualified hairdresser?

With a normal apprenticeship it seems to be more straightforward, the salon takes you on and trains you, but we can't figure out how an 'Internship' ties in in terms of actually eventually qualifying at some point? She doesn't want to take on an internship unless it will actually count towards qualifying at some point.

Would be very grateful for any advice...

    Yes.

There is no apprenticeship as such in this country, you work in a salon and cover certain training for a period of about four years, then you are 'qualified'.

    There are no specific regulations.

    thank you very much

I guess as part of those four years, the salon would send you to college one day/week or something to learn the skills?

would you know if those 4 years would be shorter if she does a training course first - the 6 month FAS course for example?

You learn most things in a salon, and they may send you to a training course in Salon Supply/ somewhere like that to gain certificates, but as I said, as they are not necessary in this country you will mainly be on the job trained.

Yes, I done that course and it significantly reduced my time learning in the salon, gets you on the floor quicker, but it will still take a lot of time.

thanks very much - do how do you know how much 'salon time' it takes to qualify?

It's usually four or five years, but it depends how well you get on and how fast you pick things up really. There is no set time, but that's a general guideline. :)

I may be starting an internship in hairdressing, which is only for 6 to 9 months........what happens after that????

You will be considered either a first year, or if you pick it up well, a second yr. After that i you're lucky a job. That's about it, really.

but my internship says 6 to 9 months might be getting changed under new regulations to 9 to 18 months, my worry is what if i'm let go after the 9 months? Where do i go from there??

It is very likely that you will, unfortauntely, but at the same time you may get lucky and be kept on! If you do let go then you're not really much better of if I'm being very honest, because you're still a trainee. Although you will have more experience there isn't much opportunity for people in training.

You can do a course with FAS, which I really recommend, or there are a lot of PLC courses depending where you are, but you will still be a first yr no matter what course you do, when you enter a salon courses mean next to nothing unfortunately because they don't consider you as being trained in 'their' methods.

What are the new regulations? I thought job bridge was only 6 - 9 months, don't think they are allowed to change it for that long. I may be wrong, but check it out because it sounds suspicious. Who would work for free for nearly two years. I have one unpaid work in hairdressing before and trust me, it is hell.
