Compression leaking in to the crankcase blowing the oil out, new pistons rings and liners should sort it

£300 seems cheap. Heres a link for an online deal but they are quoting £555 for a full engine overhaul kit less bearings
    malpasonline

I`m considering doing an overhaul myself as the engine is very smokey.
Will you be changing the Gaskets as-well or can you reuse the old ones??

Sometimes on a John Deere, the diesel can leak into the oil and end up in the sump. Is it oil or dieselie oil?

Sorry to hijack thread but I have a 785XL which hasnt been worked too hard til yesterday when I took it out topping rushes (first time I've used the pto since I bought it last year). I noticed a substantial leak from the plates beneath the bell housing when I parked up. Oil level in dipstick is still at max and the oil leaking from it is very black and smells like old burnt oil. Thanks ABlur.

what colour is the oil? if it is white or grey it will be coolant, diesel will thin out the oil if theres lots of diesel in it it should be easy to smell the diesel in the oil.prob no harm to check coolant level before you use the tractor.
