Easily the masters for me. The same course every year for starters gives me some sort of association with it somehow.

The Open, simply because the elements and the course is nothing like they play all year.

Open - tv coverage the best. 8am to 6pm in my underpants on the couch!

US open for me. Ever since Payne Stewart vs Mickleson in Pinehurst all those years ago. Had 5 e/w on stewart at 50/1 which influenced me greatly.Love the battle against par as a break from the birdie fests on most courses.I think the coverage is better too than the masters; same shots of augusta every few minutes and they always leave the earlier holes out to a large degree.saying that I'll be glued to it in 2 weeks time!

The Masters >>>> any other major/tournament.

    The course.

    I love The Open,

The music on BBC, Peter Allis and his antiquated bull. The crazy weather the unlucky breaks, the unexpected winner. The fact it is on a links. The old yellow scoreboard.

I can understand the criticism of the open , it does not give the best golfer as the winner - the luck of the draw, with weather and wind.
But it is the major I grew up on, it is the type of couse you can go out and play the next day.

So - I guess the reasons I like The Open are sentiment , so technically I'm wrong , but you can't be technical about everything.

The Masters - no doubt about it.

However, if I were a professional golfer, I think I'd prefer to win The Open over any other. It being the only major on this side of the pond :)

Masters, beautifully presented course, after a while you get to know each hole, non golfers like it because of the flower beds, early sunshine, one of the few true US golfing traditions and kicks off the Irish golfing year of sun and rounds after work!

Close call between the open and the Masters but the open just shades it, coverage is great and i love links golf. Another big plus is that you can play the course not like the masters.

Like mike, it's a very close call between the Masters & The Open but I'm going for the Masters. For me it just kicks off the golf season. Love it
(If i had children i presume this is like choosing your favourite one!)

The Masters. Combination of: early season hunger for golf, we know the course so well, seems to most often produce the most thrilling finales, seems least vulnerable to journeymen winners, the course is beautiful, and I like its design philosophy even if a little biased against faders.

Ideally The Open should be our favourite though: history and tradition, links, THE Open. But is pipped by the above.

US Open. Comfortable third spot. Some of the courses are very fine, but thick rough around the greens thing has spoiled a few too many of them. Too many duffers seem to snatch one.

USPGA. The runt of the litter. With only one thing going for it - its a Major. Other than its major status, it just feels like A-Another US tour event.

Agree with Rickylovingusall - to entertain me, its the Masters, but if (when) I win one, would prefer to win The Open.

    The Masters is my favourite.
Firstly it signifies the start of the "golf season" in Ireland (longer days and warmer weather).
The course is immaculate and so well presented.
The course is the same one each year so I know every hole. There are several holes over water where a good shot can lead to eagle or a bad shot leads to bogey.

The Open is my next favourite just behind the Masters. It requires so many different types of shots and the elements also come into play.

I've never really got into the US Open. I watch it but it doesn't do much for me.

The PGA................I've never seen why it is considered a Major and cannot remember anything about it.

    The Masters

One thing I dont miss about the Open / Masters on BBC is Hazel Irvines Lisp...cant bear lsitening to her...

Probably the masters for me, but I do love the open and the us open as well.

I'd love to see the PGA made into a more desirable one by touring it around the world. Have it in south Africa one year, Australia the next, maybe even Ireland some year!

USPGA did jettison its chance to maintain a distinctive character when it swtched from matchplay to strokeplay. Interest as a spectacle and TV money and interest potentially declining in the latter stages of the matchplay format are clear, but with matchplay, it what have kept a distinct cache and link to the original form of competitive golf.

    The Master without doubt.
Know all the holes and dangers. Love the colour and noise.
Never leave the couch, wouldn't even go out for a pint when it's on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 281 ✭✭jimmystars

Us open for me no 1. Strongest field. Toughest test and variety of courses ( sometimes not so good ones), but still seems to always be interesting.

Open Championship at 2. Love links golf and seeing the american pros deal with links golf. Would rather it was on TV late at night though. Nothing better than watching golf after playing it.:D

Masters at 3. Great start to the year. Really marks the start of proper golf. Not gone on the limited field though. When Ernie Els couldnt make it last year it showed somethings not quiet right.

USPGA at 4. Never really watch it for some reason. Dont even know why

    The Open for me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,583 ✭✭✭kkelliher

The masters or the open. Peter allis to be far makes both for me although since the bbc lost the full rights to the masters it has never been as good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,084 ✭✭✭bigtimecharlie

The Open for me, all that coverage by the bbc since the mid 90's.

    US Pga by a mile!

Only kidding, it's the Masters for me - I know every hole on the back 9 by heart and would give my right arm to play there. Also love the way the TV towers are kept discreet, coverage is dictated by the tournament and no cooked food for sale anywhere on the course. Everything that makes it different is what makes it the best

Went for the Masters, though its a close call between that & the open, an afternoon of Peter Aliss whilst relaxing on the sofa is definitely one of lifes little pleasures!

Yes, Peter Alliss does make all the difference, especially with all the banana skins he slips on

The Open is my favourite followed by the U.S Open.

So the PGA is pretty crap then, I prefer TPC or some of the early big tournaments like doral, can't remember too many PGA moments now that I think about it

Nothing beats the magic of Augusta. Georgia in the springtime. Magnolia Lane. Amen corner.Butlers Cabin.....
Plus I love the deep South:).
Obviously from a tv watchin point of view the 13 hours of coverage at the open is better. And the links golf is unique.
Still Its The Masters for me.

amazes me that people select an event based on the tv coverage offered :D

whats that got to do with it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 354 ✭✭The Guardian

    oh, to answer the OP

    masters by a mile
then prob the US Open - pebble beach etc puts this onto another level

the british open is grand, if you exclude the wind, rain etc

    The Masters for me.

The build up is great, knowing the holes from watching over the years at the same venue, it never disappoints.

I would have thought it has everything to do with it. If, there is very limited TV coverage, how are you supposed to enjoy it? (Unless of course you are lucky enough to actually go to them regularly). I think the Masters would be number 1 for me due to the beauty of the course and the familiarity that most top-class players have with it, but The open edges it due to the BBC coverage all day without any ads. It drives me crazy having to endure endless sky sports ad breaks when watching the masters.

    Agreed.
The whole feel around The Masters is unreal. And there is always a great story to it aswell.
    Can't wait for Wednesday week

Hard to pick between the Masters and the Open for me. Every April I think the Masters is the bees knees until the Open comes around and it takes its turn on the throne. If I had to pick one it would probably been the Open though or..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 892 ✭✭✭Ben1977

The open for me. One of these years I'm going to lock myself in the sitting room for the weekend, wall to wall golf!!! What I love about it is the weather, anyone can win it, the crowns, the views, the 50ft putting from off the green, the imagination, Greg Norman hitting a 4iron 120yds into the wind.

I could go on and on.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 802 ✭✭✭m r c

My favourite is the Masters. I think a big part of that is the exclusivity of Augusta National. The sheer fact that most golf fans will never get inside let alone play it has to increase the interest in the competition IMHO. Plus on tv at least it has to be the most beautiful looking few hundred acres of land anywhere in the world. I can't wait for next week tbh.

Don't really get this. The Masters is an invitational tournament yet has about 20 different criteria that if a player will meet, he will be invited. Ernie, while a tremendous advert for the game and one of the best players ever, did not meet the criteria so did not play. Don't see whats wrong with this. Should Greg Norman be invited every year because he was World number one for years and won a few majors?

Masters for me. As a kid, with no interest in golf, my dad would always be watching the coverage late and I used to get to stay up late and watch too. I can remember Larry Mize's chip, rooting for anybody but Faldo:D cheering on Corey Pavin, for some reason Pavin was a favourite of mine before I knew anything about golf. I can remember watching other majors, but the Masters was always a "must watch".
Its just a very special tournament and the course setting is probably the biggest factor.

The Open for me too, because of what it represents and that's it's always on around my birthday, and Faldo, with whom I share said birthday and was my favourite golfer (golfer, not person) as a result, did well in the competition when I was growing up.

As I have read more about it and its history in recent times I love it even more and really have to attend it soon. I do love the Masters as well, it's a close second. Have come to appreciate the US Open more in the past few years and agree with what others said about the PGA being better if it had stayed matchplay.
