Rebuilding for dummies

Apologies to the regulars, who I'm sure are fed up of these type of threads, but I've got great advice on here in the past, so thanks in advance for any help.

Ok, I'm a dedicated vaper at this stage, but haven't made the leap into rebuilding.

I still use the Kanger Twist kit (T3s) for out and about, and have a Provari Mini which I use with a Killer 705 in a tank and a Boge carto tank at home..

Having previously been a fan of convenience / ready made solutions, I'm just starting to come round to the idea of getting a better flavour and th (and maybe saving a little money in the long run) by rebuilding.

As usual, the range of options is a bit mindboggling, but having read a bit I'm minded to try the Aga T2 (I think I'd prefer to be able to see how much juice is left).

Is this a reasonable choice for a new rebuilder, or would you recommend something else in its place?

Also in my basket I have:
    - .20 kanthal wire
    - 3mm silica wick
    - .400 stainless mesh

Does that look ok, or would you advise different sizes?

[tl,dr: what's the best options for someone looking to get set up with an effective rebuildable atty?]

Looks good to me pal. PBasardo just uploaded a (lengthy) video detailing 3 build methods with the AGA T that are worth a watch to a new user.

There are loads of other videos that are as good or better all over youtube, just have to look.

If you don't have a torch to oxidise the mesh, he shows how to do a coil on an unoxidised wick.

BUT, I wouldn't do that on an ego battery or (can't on) a provari.
A mechanical mod is what you want there.

If you are going to build it on the ego, wrap as many turns on the mesh as you can to get the resistance up and have the voltage at the lowest. Then check for shorts and resistance on the provari or a multimeter before you fire it!

I've done it loads, but it's not ideal. It will do until you get a mech mod, which you will want, if you do enjoy genesis attys. You may just sell that provari and get yourself a nice mechanical mod ;)

    Thanks Superneat.

I hesitate to ask, but why a mech mod?

I have a blowtorch to oxidise wick and a multimeter to test resistance, and I wasn't intending to use the atty on the eGo.. is there some reason why a mech mod would perform better than the Provari, and if so (God help me) what devices are we talking about?

You're not watt-limited, so if you started getting into twisted coils or multiple coil configs you can achieve much vapourousnessness.

Superneat likes the really flash stuff, you'll wish you hadn't asked!

Cheaper versions of what he likes would be the Smoktech Natural, the Kamry Storm (aka the CCTS/Chi-Chi) or the Drawtube (aka the SSTS/DS Telescope on ESI).
The Kamry Storm has a tapered top so it looks a little off with 22mm devices but great with 19mm-20mm devices, and it's telescopic.
The Natural comes with flat or tapered tops, but most vendors are stocking the flat version - looks the bees knees. Unfortunately not telescopic.
The Drawtube is flat-topped and telescopic.

Well for me, the main thing is that, when you wrap a coil at too low a resistance, certain mods won't fire it, because they have built in protection. They aim to prevent short circuiting, which can still happen if the resistance is high enough, and you have a short.

That can potentially fry the electronics in an ego or an APV, ie Vamo, Provari etc. leaving you with an expensive paperweight.

A mechanical mod is just a battery tube with a switch, that aims to provide power to the atty and nothing else. That has pros and cons.

Pros are, they are great for working with genesis attys, don't have any circuitry or electronics that can fail over time and they last forever.

Cons are the fact you forgo extra protection you can get from an APV and without the use of an extra component you don't have variable wattage/voltage.

The reason most genny users like mech mods is the fact you can wrap the coil at the resistance that gets you the watts you like and suits you best between 4.2V and 3.5V, ie the power cycle of a fresh battery, so you don't need to worry about voltage/wattage.

That I do! But at the moment I have a few cheap and cheerful mechanical mods that didn't break the bank.

The smok telescope, I got on here second hand and the udtl, for €14 on ESI but I wouldn't recommend that one.

As grindle said, the natural would be a great entry to the mechanical arena! I think they are around €50. I would have bought myself one but I have an EA mod coming to me soon, which is a similar device and although it is better, it's 3 times dearer :o

If you thought the provari was expensive, just wait til you see what certain mech mods go for!

Here is one I hope to have by the end of the month (being made atm).

Price? €230 with extra 510 top cap

Nice. I want to get a nice mech mod something neat or maybe one of the nice genesis hybrids. V sexy them.

As for op... I got an aga t+ recently enough and (after a little teething trouble) am really liking it. My first rebuildable was a dripper tho. They are a bit more forgiving I found especially as you're using silicon wicks so no shorts and shoi to worry about.

Imma quickly jump in here while the going is good.

Tried to do a dual coil on my Vamo (bamo whamo) got 1.5 ohms fired her up at 15 watts (maxium limit) and the coil barely managed to get red before the 10 second cut off.

So it seems I need to get a mechanical mod. But I really want a bottom switch one. Like the Gus or GP Paps mods have. I could support an Irish vendor and get the Gus 22 from Vaporium. Then perhaps I can start rocking proper plumage madness like some of you fellas.

Whadda ya think of the Gus for dual coil madness with the igo-l etc? Good choice? ... looks so shiny :p

(also €100 or under fellas... looking at you superneat)

There is a batch of GP Paps 2.1 coming soon. I'll be buying one along with a spheroid. I can stick two in the basket if you'd like?

Send us a pm if interested. :)

How the heck do you buy a spheroid? It's always out of stock as far as I can see?

If you go to the Spheroid page on Vapourart it has a live twitter feed and when a new batch is ready it gives a few days warning of the time sales will go live. They cost 85 quid but delivery is via DHL (I think) and is something like 20 quid. However, sales of 100 euro or over have free delivery so if you add some liquid or spares to your order you don't have to worry about delivery costs and you'll have your order in about three days.

Also there are numerous threads on other forums, where perseas gives detailed updates, including info regarding upcoming projects, like paps x and the brass paps 2.1.

    :)

It says on the vapourart site that the higher the coil on the spheroid, the stronger the th, I presume this is the same with the a7oid cause Im getting sfa th from the a7oid. Loads of flavour but almost no throat hit!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,026 ✭✭✭grindle

Yup, the further the coil is away from the airhole the more your throat will be hit.
