Big toe nail splitting

My son is 15 month and is walking 5 months. He is on his second pair of shoes but only really uses them very little and when he is walking outside. Twice now his big toe (different feet) nails have split and look very sore as its split down on to the bed. Is this the wrong size shoes (measured v recently) or is it…

Is this the wrong size shoes (measured v recently) or is it 'normal'? His feet are too big for pre walkers so the shoes are quite hard leather.

Could be a deficiency... never seen nails splitting from wrong size shoes... I'd bring him to doctor.
