If a taxi meter is switched off, can you refuse to pay the taxi driver ?

    Don't think so Tubs.

Maybe he was charging a flat fee or something.

Give us more info please. Was it more then you'd expect to pay?

Would i be right in thinking that the reason a taxi driver wouldn't have the meter running is to do with tax dodging ?

    And fare gouging.

    Ask for a printed receipt.

Unless you agreed to a flat fee beforehand yes.
Also if the meter is not on and the taxi crashes you are not covered by the insurance.

Not really, many a time I have stepped into a cab and explained to the driver that

    a) this trip will cost you x euro and I'm willing to pay you y euro, giving you a profit of z euro.
    b) there isn't exactly a massive queue of people lining up for a lift.

With the result being an off meter fare

Would not think so my friend. Local hackney has their drivers on taxi-plates. In that instance the fares are set already. If they choose to run it that would be the most they could charge. Anytime I have taken a hackney with the meter going the set local fair was less than came up from the meter. Was it a hackney you booked by any chance op.

How do you know what his profit is?

No not linked at all.....ask for a receipt next time.

    On the trip.

So I know that petrol for the journey costs a tenner (give or take) and I'm offering him 30. Usually that means he makes a profit of 20 assuming that he doesn't crash and I don't make a mess

    Where are you OP?

Taxi rates are not applied in lots of places as it's too much and locals won't pay it

Any midlands town and it's 5 euro local run, set fare
A taxi will charge you 4.10 before you even move! And lash on an extra euro per passenger!

There was a poster in commuting forum from Letterkenny saying the same, fiver for a local run

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,145 ✭✭✭LETHAL LADY

How much was the final fare?

So you can tell just by looking at a taxi how much it costs to maintain, how good it's fuel consumption is, how much insurance he is paying, the rate of depreciation and the rent (if any) the driver is paying to a company?

You're some man for one man.:)

Well no, I'd say what I think it would cost, how much I'm willing to pay and ask a simple yes or no answer

In the north is usually 3.50 plus 50p per mile after. Can't charge extra for more people or for heavy traffic.

What about his return trip with no fare and the cost of car, insurance, tax etc. all of a sudden your 20 quid profit is gone. More to costs than just petrol

    Absolutely incorrect

I got a taxi home last weekend, the meter was running. At the end of the trip it came to €12, handed the driver a €10 note while I looked for the €2 and he hands me back €2 change saying €8 will cover it.

The meter price is the max price I think, you can haggle on what you actually pay after that. The taxi man in my case haggled for me!

Have you considered that he also pays for insurance, servicing, cleaning, tax, radio fees, licencing fees and PLI? Surely you're intelligent enough to that that petrol is not the driver's only expense, right?

His car will still depreciate and his insurance still cost him, irrespective of whether or not he takes the reduced fare on offer

Well yes I do but he would still have those expenses driving the cab about with no fare in the back seat

Why would you even think of not paying the fare?

You got a lift, pay for it.

I always make polite conversation with taxi drivers...ask them is the day busy, how long they're on, was it quiet over the weekend or whatever.

9/10 it results in getting a lesser fare at the end WITH the meter on.

Perhaps someone disliked their name being used in vain and had a word or two with him!
