Sorry if this has been done to death, but does anyone know a reasonable site for wild bird feed? Niger seed for my flock of finches in particular! Thanks in advance.

(actually advice on what to buy would be appreciated too)

The flock of finches are wild birds that visit my garden in case I phrased that a bit badly. I don't actually own a flock of protected wild birds!

Peanuts, Nyger seed, sunflower seeds and sunflower hearts are all good to feed finches. Personally, I find sunflower hearts the best, but it is quite expensive.

Good places to order online are BirdWatch Ireland shop or birdfood.ie

Much cheaper to buy 12.75kg bags of niger and also of sunflower hearts from Amazon than on those sites.

Is €80 for a bundle deal that contains one of each from birdwatch ireland, but the same can be gotten from Amazon for a little under €60 (and no postage charge either on top of that). Prefer to buy local where possible, but it is hard to ignore a 25%+ price difference especially when that difference can go towards buying something like a 12.5kg pack of suet pellets (£22.99 on Amazon for 12.5kg yet circa €13 to €15 for a 2.5kg tub here in Ireland)

What I would suggest to folk is that they approach independent pet shops first and ask if they can get in bulk bags of seed either by the sack or in plain plastic bags.

Friend of mine asked this of a Limerick pet shop (paws and claws) and they have gotten him in a 25kg bag of sunflower hearts that works out cheaper per kilo than even the Amazon prices. Independent pet shops will also do great deals on live food etc if they get regular repeat purchases on them.

As Kess said more than likely better going the Amazon route. Brother in law picked up 25kg of nyjer in a petshop in coolock for approx €44. Picked up this roll top feeder which can be turned to do either nyjer or normal seed.

Not sure how good it is but the birds seem to like it along with herself (no mess left) but homebase are doing the 5in1 peckish 12.5kg for approx 22.
Putting mine into an old lidl bottle feeder, slows the starlings down a bit and the bits they dont eat get used up by the smaller gang.

On a seperate note anyone tried the peanut butter & feeder from Cj's.

BirdwatchIreland may be more expensive than some, but their margins go to support a birding cause, so I'll except a price differential.
Having said that, I recently ordered from petconnection.ie and they value their customers having sent out a wrong item and I'll be shopping there again. They're based in north and prices are in pounds so exchange rate is a factor.
