Giant vs Specialized bike sizes advice needed....

Im looking to give the go-ahead on a Giant Defy 1 this week.
I've been advised medium is the size I require.
According to Giant's website, this equates to 50. Im 5'8'' and a half.
I rode one for a bit and it felt ok, tho its my first bike so not really sure on whats ok or not!
However, my twin brother, who has been cycling for a few years now, he has a Specialized Allez, size 56, and I rode that today, and it also feels fine, tho a stretch when sitting in the saddle and trying to get feet on the ground.

My brother and I are identical, so same height!
This has me a little confused as to what size Giant I should go for.
    Their M/L is 53.5
My brother reckons he probably went a size too big with his and 54 would have been better, tho hes had it 4 years or so, put a lot of miles on it, including one Etape Du Tour, and it has done him very well indeed.

So I'm looking for some advise here on what I should go for? The shops all say medium, so should I just go with that?

Go to a bike shop and let them measure you. You might have long legs, short torso or vice versa or even just be normal. It's not in a bike shops interest to sell you a wrongly sized bike.

The two bike shops Im looking at dont have a specific measuring service, but both are reputable and I know they wont see me wrong.
Should I request they take some measurements?

If they've the bikes in stock and are letting you sit on them and checking you for size then fair enough.

Bought my Allez from Staggs and he had me sit on it for size before I bought - he didn't take measurements but then he's been doing the job for years and it was much better to be able to actually see for size and how I felt on it than for them order in from an inside leg measurement.

I also looked at the Giant Defy but my wife bought one and I didn't want to be mr and mrs matchy :D

Ultimately it's how you feel on the bike - if you aren't comfy you won't want to ride it very often.
