I've been playing Defense Grid: The awakening on steam for a good while and love it. Was just wondering is there any good similar type games on steam?

    I'm not sure about Steam.
The Gemcraft games are somewhat good. The latest one has a fiver for some extra features (including a non ending mode till you run out of mana). Bloons Tower Defense is the same, I think it's 15 quid so I dunno. I prefer the 4th one, TBH. The paid version really adds a lot of P2W (albeit you already paid for it) stuff that makes the game too easily.

Orcs Must Die! is another one. It's 3D and you control one character and you have to place traps and stuff in 3rd person (or 1st person; forget which) but it's on Steam.

Well Gemcraft and Bloons Tower Defense is like that. Especially Bloons. I mean on average, it'll take a few rounds in bloons to set up and that's it. Gemcraft gets to a point where you'll lose eventually if you have the fiver upgrade pack (since it lets you play unlimited mode). But that takes a while since you'll be playing lots of levels over and over to get experience points which'll take a few hours I guess.

I know Gemcraft you can pause the game anytime and still put down towers or put gems into towers (gems shoot things). I don't think you can buy and place towers in Bloons Tower Defese when the game is paused.

You could try Onslaught 2, that's completely free and fairly relaxing. I guess Plants Vs Zombies (the plants are the towers) is a bit relaxing but it's kinda odd.
You'll have random drops of sunlight then you need to move your mouse near and some plants have to be activated manually but it's not too difficult at all.

I didn't like Orcs2 either, the levels are all screwy because of the co-op (the train-tracks, etc.) I found the first one more technical, where you can actually lock down areas and not have to babysit multiple paths all the time.
If you didn't play the first one, it's worth checking out. They made a balls of Orcs2 IMO.

Sanctum is an interesting spin. It's a first person tower defense game. I quite like it.

Speaking of the 2nd one. 1 the lads got it on sale and we have being playing co-op 100x times better.

I figured it would be, they seemed to have made the levels with co-op in mind, while crapping all over the single player experience. They added enough player-combat for two people, so the amount of slack you have to pick up in single player makes the whole thing a complete drag.
The first Orcs didn't have co-op, so the maps didn't suffer the same contrivances (like rail-roads everywhere), it was more about trap tactics and choke points than running around constantly.
These are the levels you find under "Classic Mode" (I think it's called?) in Orcs 2... more playable, but the balance still feels off compared to the first one.

Sol Survivor is ok. Fun enough, no big campaign with it but a good few different factions you can play as with various mixes of towers available to each. You can create custom characters to play with two, picking your powers and towers. It's main thing is multiplayer tower defence, I haven't tried this aspect of it but it's meant to be done fairly well and be interesting enough.

I didn't put anywhere close to as much time into it as I did with Defence Grid but I got to put enough hours into it to justify the 8 Euro or whatever I spent on it.

If you have Warcraft 3, the custom made 'maul' games are great.

One DS game which was frequently overlooked it 'Lock's Quest'
