large meteorite slice 288 grams (video link)

I don't see a specific thread here for videos so will upload and let the mods move if required

I just had my colleague cut a 4 kilo meteorite and this was one of the larger slices to emerge.There is a 315 gram one but I haven't taken video yet.

dimensions are 147 x 140 x 6 mm

the metal you see is 93% iron , 6% nickel and the remaining 1% is made up of various elements in the parts per million range

Where was it found?

NWA 869 is listed in the Meteoritical Bulletin as having been found in Northwest Africa in 2000.There are conflicting reports about the actual location of the strewnfield being in either Morocco or Algeria

regarding nwa7325 the possible Mercury rock it is very much still undecided if it is indeed from Mercury.Dr Tony Irving who studied it has written in the abstract that is "only" a possible candidate for the origin of this absolutely unique meteorite, hopefully further research will tell us more about it. But it seems definitely a planetary rock!

The media are blowing out of all proportion the value of the ham pressing iron meteorite.In another article it's worth 5 million.He'll never get that for it.Mike Farmer offered him 50 grand-he probably should have taken it but fair play to him for recognising its' true nature ;-0

My friend Jason is one very smart cookie.He built his own saw and works with various materials including meteorite and dinosaur bone.I believe his saw has a guide rail on it.There may be a picture on his website , worth a visit anyway to check out his work http://www.opalandjasper.com

I wouldn't call that NPR article misleading but the journalist has seemingly not done a whole lot of research.

99% of meteorites come from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter whereas this article doesn't mention that fact at all.
The other 1% come from our Moon and Mars. There are quite a few meteorites that are thought to come from the asteroid Vesta which makes up as much as 9% of the mass in the entire asteroid belt. These meteorites are known as HED ,Howardites, Eucrites and Diogenites

Some weird pics on there now, pity he can't cut it with some kind of wire, you'd lose less.

yeah you're right about cutting with a wire saw but that sh*t isn't cheap---even farming it out is gonna cost $60 an hour

Oh Im sure it is, nicest stone I ever saw is one of those shiny ones you'd get in a Garden Centre. I've never seen pieces like on the site there IRL.

Didn't know their was such a thing as Diamond wire. That's my something new learned for the day.


So what did this one look like before he worked at it? Some before and afters would be cool. Should add them on the site there.
