Bought a car from a dealer with no tax; can I tax it while waiting for the log book?

    Hi,

As above. I bought a car on Thursday evening from a dealer. The car's tax had expired recently. The dealer will obviously send off the change of ownership forms and I'll get the log book back in due course, but in the interim, can I go to the motor tax office and tax the car so that I'm on the right side of right?

    Ta.

Usually guards won't mind your tax being out when you're waiting on the log book,as far as I know you can't tax it but you should be fine once everything else is in order.

    You have 2 options.

Pay the dealer the cost of the tax and get him to tax it for you before its transferred into your name or wait until its transferred into your name and the Tax certificate arrives at your house and tax it then. There's no other way of doing it.

Perfect. I'll drop into him in the morning so and see if he'll tax it for me.

Was it last Friday you bought the car ? If so, the dealer may have already started the change process. You can check the status on this link :

    https://www.motortax.ie/PSE/start.do?page=welcome

you just put in the registration number of the car and it will tell you if there has been a recent change.

Assuming it has been changed but you havent yet got the cert then you should be able to apply for a new PIN on the MotorTax site also and then tax online. To get the PIN you need to put in the name, address etc of the person the car is registered to.

Sorry, I'd lost track of my days with the day off. It was yesterday evening, Thursday. I'll follow up with him in the morning so.

If you hang on until Monday (i.e. keep the car off the road), you won't have to pay tax for the month of March.

How long is the tax out?
If you get last owner to tax it and its out with a while, you'll have to back tax it!

I think it was the end of February. Do you mean that if I paid the dealer to tax it, he'd have to tax it from then? If so I'm better holding off, I'd say. We know the dealer well so we'll make sure the forms are sent off promptly.

Does anyone know if there is any form/letter etc. I should keep in the car which would keep a Garda reasonably happy if they stopped me, or am I taking a risk in even driving it?

If the car is out of tax for more than the current month you will have to get a tax renewal form stamped by the Gardai. You can do this now and if you are stopped you can show it and should be ok as Gardai will see your intention to tax the car

The OP will still have to pay tax for March even if they keep the car off the road until Monday as the change of ownership on the log book will be dated in March.

Agreed. If you buy a car at the end of the month, you owe tax for that entire month. The motor tax office do not offer pro rated tax payments based on partial days ownership. Last year, I bought my car on March 29. That is the date of sale that the dealer wrote down on the ownership paperwork that he sent off to Shannon.

When I went into the motor tax office on April 2nd, they wanted money for the month of March, as technically I did own the car in March, even if was only for 2 days. I wasn't driving it, as I had to get my insurance situ sorted out first. I had to get a form stamped at my Garda station declaring that the car was off the roads for the month of March before they would let me tax the car beginning the month of April.

It may seem like a minor detail, but you are paying to tax a car for an entire year. Tax it now and it will expire at the end of March 2014. Why only get 11 months worth of car tax for your money, as if you wait a couple more days, you can do it for the full 12 months.

Is this just an urban legend or it is written somewhere? I am looking for this information, but can not find one word about it.

It's an urban legend. The offence is on display and they can do you if they feel like it (which most won't, but you're still not exempt or anything)
