Revenue Online and JavaScript

    Hello,

Just got the e-mail to log in to see the LPT stuff - on Good Friday ffs.

I haven't been to the ROS site since I did my returns last October. Since then, as many of you as well I'm sure, I've been warned of vulnerabilities in JavaScipt and advised to drop it from the browser, which I did.

However, the ROS site won't work without it.....

Whats the opinion? I am not in any hurry to pay, but this has nothing to do with it.

    Bye B

It uses Java, not javascript - completely different despite the name. Without javascript nothing would work on the web.

You will have to re-enable it if you want to use ros, the taxman will not accept Oracle's insecurity as an excuse.

Yes, I rectivated the Java on the browser and got in, fwiw!

You'd have thought the Revenue might have explained to ROS customers... typical arrogance.

I don't think you can blame you deleting the wrong programme on revenue due to your electronic insecurities.

Do you want them to do your return for you? If you submit before August they will.

Maybe then they can come sort your love life out too

I got an answer from ROS - I had asked about Java v Javascript as well...

Here is the text - a little long....

"Java Security Concerns in relation to ROS
    18/01/2013 Version 1.0 Page 2 of 3
Revenue actively monitors and reviews all IT industry alerts in relation to operating systems, browsers, databases and computer languages to consider their impact on our customers.
We are aware of recent separate alerts issued in relation to Java (Oracle) and certain browser versions (Microsoft) and the associated media coverage. As always with such alerts, it is important to follow the vendor's instructions and
    recommended software 'patches'.
With regard to Java specifically, Revenue reviews the technologies used in its applications on an ongoing basis, and at this time Java remains a key component of our ROS products due to the requirements for qualified digital signatures as per the e-Commerce legislation.

We do however understand the concerns that customers may have in light of these press reports and would offer the following advice in relation to its
    continued use:
    • Update Java to the latest recommended version to ensure you have the latest fixes released by Oracle. Oracle have added a new Security Level slider (defaulted to High) which will warn against the running of unsigned apps. If preferred, this can be set to Very High.
    • Enable Java for ROS use only. There are a number of options available to customers in this regard:
    - Configure the browser to enable Java for ROS only - this can be readily configured in Internet Explorer or Chrome. This option is not available in Firefox or Safari, so if either of these are your preferred browser, you may wish to explore plugin blockers like ClicktoPlay (Firefox) or ClickToPlugin (Safari) which offer Plug-in blocking features."

They then tell you how to do the selection for various browsers.

I selected ROS for Chrome but its a bummer because there are others who require JAVA such a gmail and ryanair.....

Ho-hum - notice nothing specific about javascript....

    Bye, Barry

I can't pay the property tax because of this. They emailed me to say they're working on a fix. Think I've got a day or two before the fan is destroyed.

Can't you complete your return by post? I did.

If you are a ROS customer you MUST make your return via ROS. That is the 'advantage' of being a ROS customer. I had to become a ROS customer because I work a lot abroad, not often feasible to use the mail. Now I am obliged to use it, no choice, and I have to activate Java to do so.

That is not true. I am registered for ROS but did a paper return last year.

    Me too.

@BarryM, if you are that concerned about your PC being infected/taken over by a remote Java exploit, you could ring the LPT hotline 1890 200 255, select option 3, and have them register your details online, over the phone. That way, your PC remains uncompromised and you get to stay tax compliant.

Clarification - 1. the legislation says if you are the owner of more than one property you must use ROS. 2 I only received an LPT notification from ROS, no paper. 3. I reproduced the email reply I got from ROS in an earlier post, it did not refer to any telephone number, where did you get it??

BTW 1, tax compliance is not an issue, I only queried ROS because when I tried to log in it required me to load Java.

BTW 2, 1890 numbers are not accessible from abroad, afaik.

    1. You never mentioned you are the owner of more than one property
    2. Which is the process if you are the owner of multiple properties, as I understand it.
    3. In the course of my work, also it's on all of their literature, on Revenue's website, and Revenue have been pushing in the media in the last few days, since owners of multiple properties who've been unable to login online for multiple reasons have been urged to ring the hotline and they will register your details over the phone.*

BTW 1: my solution offers you way to pay the tax and avoid using Java.

BTW 2: the geographical based number is +353 1 7023049.

    *source: http://www.thejournal.ie/more-than-130000-property-tax-returns-filed-872790-Apr2013/
In an update from the Revenue Commissioner’s office today, a spokesperson noted that multiple property owners who cannot file and pay online can authorise another person to do so. For people for whom these arrangements do not suit, they can call the LPT helpline on 1890 200 255 to pay and file online.

    So?

BTW 1: my solution offers you way to pay the tax and avoid using Java.

    ... and your solution is??

So, I should read the journal so that I know how to pay the tax that the legislation says I have to pay online..... pull the other one; and I have to pay if I call from abroad?

As above, call Revenue and they'll register your details over the phone. You won't have to use Java.

It's a tax based on self assessment. Owners are obliged to keep themselves informed of their liabilities. Do you expect Revenue to write out to every expat to inform them that they may be liable for the LPT?

As regards the phone number, I have no idea - maybe email Revenue and ask what the call costs are from abroad?
