Major problem with calves not sucking here. Small dairy herd. calves born fine, left with mother but will not suckle at all. Cows milked and offer bottle to calves ... they will kind of chew the teat but WILL NOT suck.. pure torture !!! Stomach tubed for first feed . Gave multi vet injection. Last few sucked after about 3/4 days. any ideas ?????????????

what minerals are the cows getting precalving and for how long?

Pre-calving minerals is your best shot. Silage was extra low in them because of the poor weather last year.

was shaking that pre calver stuff on the silage and was also feeding rolled barley to make up for bad silage. Obviously short of some thing !! only 3 left to calf. Vet cant figure it either.

stop stomach-tubing the first feed.it should only be used as a last resort, the calf only gets half the antibodies because the tube is in the rumen instead of the abomasum.feed them 2.5lts with a bottle with a teat instead and they will suck at will.(and they are trained)

Worn out with them. Vet gave them appetite stimulant and they finally got the idea. Gave selenium injection to the cows still to calve. We will see how the next calf behaves ?????????????? Thanks for all the help
