    Hi all

Getting married I'm few months, myself & my other half have to pick wine for the big day! We are not big into wine just wanted cheapish easy to drink wines!

Lidl are doing offer at the moment of 6 for price of 4 bottles. we brought home a 2011 French Merlot called Chevalier de Fauvert pays d'Oc. The White is the same brand & year as the red except it's a Sauvignon Blanc.

    What do people think

There´s nothing wrong with buying wine in Lidl. Ultimately, it´s your wedding so get whatever you can afford or whatever fits your priorities. You can´t please everyone with your wine selection!

Up to yourself but Vin De Pays is just a step above French table wine. I think there's better New World wines out there for the same price. If your heart is set on French wine Lidl have Chateauneuf Du Pape and Chablis which are great wines and good value at cq. €12 a pop. They sometimes have the 6 for 4 deals on these too. ;)

Buy a bottle and taste it and see what you think. If you like it then get it. However I would taste before you buy.

I really really like that merlot, not a massive fan of the white, but its defo drinkable. I think ur feeding then and providing some wine which is good. Just make sure the corkage isn't going to make it pointless.... A lot of hotels are offering deals which work out cheaper then bringing ur own. Good luck

The Sauvignon Blanc might not be the best choice for a wedding as it is a wine that is not that gluggable to everyone. Before you purchase why not have a chat with your local off licence particularly if you are not that into wine. At least get their advice on the most crowd pleasing wines and if you let them know your budget they may be able to help you. There is nothing wrong with Lidl wines some aren't great but others are quite superb coming from some of the best producers who have excess stock and sell them under a different name to the likes of Lidl and Aldi.

Cheap wine does not mean bad wine. There are expensive wines that I dont like and some great cheap wines I love.

As a general rule you could tell the quality of a wine by the cork. Wine with an actual timber cork is best, then metal twisty cap, then wine in boxes (Which are great value for parties allthough they'd really look wrong at a wedding) and anything with a rubber cork is usualy downright nasty. Not always true however some one of my favourites is tesco red Australasian wine and that has a metal twisty cap. It's like a fiver a bottle!!.

The vast majority of wine is drinkable just the very odd brand is absolute plonk, try a bottle... If you can drink it and don't think it's nasty its good enough for "wine snobs" who are just full of it.... Then again I'd drink nearly anything and everything...

Saw a show where so called experts preferred blue nun that went through a soda stream to Bollanger champaine (obscenely expensive)... wine snobs dont'know anything and almost anything will do

Thanks guys for all your replies. We bought couple bottles of both the red & White wines I mentioned & got some family to taste.

I opened the Red on Wed night found it nice & soft not too cutting. Kept open bottle to test on family next night & I thought it tasted bit more bitter, maybe it was because it was opened night before.

Tested the White lastnight with it, my bro's & sis's are into their wines & didn't find anything wrong with them.

I'm sure there's nicer wines out there but it's working out at 4e a bottle with the Lidl offer. We are having big wedding of 280/300 people so be great if we got it at that price. Don't have to pay corkage thank god!

Have to figure out now how much to get per person..would half bottle per person cover?? Also do you go 50/50 on red & White?

    Thanks again.

    Hi Blondie29,

Pays D'oc is a region along the south coast of france known for producing bulk table wines. I t often has a bad reputation but the quality has greatly improved in recent years with porducers trying to compete with new world wines, trying to make wines of similar style to new world, this is why they are also putting grape variety on the lable.

Alot of house wines in restaurants and hotels would be Pays D'oc wines so you are probably getting something of similar quality, but would be paying a good bit more in a Hotel for it! Merlot and Sauvignon Pay D'oc are probably the 2 most popular wines for weddings where I work!

1/2 a bottle per person is the norm for a wedding but unfortunatley you can't tell if more white or red will be drunk on the day so maybe you should buy a little more. Also depends on number or course's you are having, 1/2 bottle for 3 course is usually fine might be a bit tight for a 5 course meal.

As others have said if you are happy with it it will be fine, you are never going to please 280 people and I guareentee they will drink it anyway .

    Thanks wobs!

We ended up buying the two wines as mentioned! Got great deal & it's very drinkable so we're happy out. Not going to please nearly 300 people so they can like it or lump it!!

    Thanks for all yer replies.
