Contacts ~ first time

    Hi everyone

I'll be getting my contact lenses any day now, but I've been only using glasses up to now. After my eye test the guy put in contacts and got me to walk around with them for a while. I managed to get one of the contacts out myself, but struggled to get the second one out and my eye went all dry and irritated, the tester had to take it out for me. Now, I'm sure soon enough I'll be able to pop them in and out myself in no time, but are there other techniques or something I can try? He had me put my arm up in the air coming at the eye from above with the other hand to remove the lense. I just felt it was very awkward or something, I can't believe everyone does it that way

Any tips, pointers, techniques would be great, I'd like to be able to pop them in and out confidently.

    Thanks in advance guys.

Go on you tube. Search contact lens insertion. There is a good one there from coopervision

You will get the hang of it in no time.
Wear the lenses for a short time at the start, if you leave them in too long and your eyes get a bit dry it can be more uncomfortable taking them out.
I used to pull up my top eyelid with one hand and then using 1 finger on the other hand I'd push the contact lens towards my lower eyelid, when it is near the eyelid I'd use a 2nd finger together with the 1st finger to pinch the lens out.
.... I'm sure YouTube will explain it better!

wore contacts for twenty years until I got lasered.

Dead simple. (if you use a pc during the day, angle it down, keeps the eye moist)

Look down. Use ring finger to slide lense to outside of eye and then pinch it out. Keep that nail trimmed! Don't be faffing around with mirrors etc. I could do it second nature, and even when slightly the worse for year never slept in them.
    But love the laser!

Thanks for taking the time to reply everyone, and for the advice. I know it's one of these things that I'll get used to, it just seemed very awkward when I had them put in for the first time. I'll watch a few youtube vids as well, I hadn't thought of that. I'll be looking into laser down the line I'd say. Thanks again :)

There are plenty of ways of doing it, it's just a matter of practise.

The method I used was to place the lens on the tip of my right index finger, pull my bottom eye lid down with my left index finger, and then look up, and just carefully place the lens in.

I remember the day I got my lenses, the optician asked me to put them in and take them out a few times whilst she observed me, to make sure that I was comfortable doing it on my own. Managed to do it easy enough. But then the next morning, about 30 minutes before my driving instructor was due to pick me up for a driving lesson, I tried putting them in but just couldn't do it. Was trying for the next 30 minutes, still no luck, had to cancel the driving lesson. Spent the next hour or two practising taking them out and putting them back in after that :o

I can't believe they let you leave the office without ensuring your competence in taking out your contacts. You should get them to go over it again when you go back to pick up your contacts. You Tube is great but for a first time wearer you should be properly trained to the Optometrists satisfaction before you take your lenses home.

If I was you I might be considering getting a more professional Optometrist for my eye care.

Thanks for your reply Foggles. They said to me that they would be calling me in a couple of days before my contacts were due in and get me to go over it a few times.

I normally use specsavers, but I was given leaflet after leaflet by Tesco so I thought I'd try them out. They told me that my lens would take about 10 days to come in, I'd say thats between 3 and 4 weeks ago. The guy was friendly enough, as were the other staff, but they were adamant that I put them in with an arm over my head and one attacking it from below. I don't know, just felt a bit awkward and I couldn't believe everyone used the same method. I was pretty sure I'd seen a friend of mine years ago more or less just pinching them or sliding them off without any of that rubbish. You are right though, I doubt I'll use Tesco for this again.
