Roof strain on BMW convertible

    Hi All

A buddy at work as a 1999 318 Convertible. Recently the roof is not closing properly. He took it to a BMW garage where they run a diagnostic and it came back as a roof strain. Basically they said they will have to start removing the roof mechanism until they find the problem which could run into €€€ and possibly more then the car is worth.

I was just wondering if there is a common problem that goes wrong with the convertible of that vintage?

    Would it be worth fixing?

Does it have to go to a BMW garage as I’m not sure a local mechanic would know where to start with such an issue.

    Advise welcome :)

Definitely doesn't have to go to a BMW garage to fix. And imo, you'd be mad bringing a car of that age to a dealer anyway. He'd probably find the solution, or at least the cause of the error by searching some of the e46 specific forums out there. Or simply googling it. Might not be that big of an issue, worth researching yourself first.

If its a 99 you will need to do a online search for e36 roof issues. Can you provide more details on the problem?

From what I gather when he tries to put the roof back on it only gets so far. It does not close fully.

The garage had to close it manually to get it to shut.
