    I have a Garmin Edge 500.
I upload it to my iMac to GarminConnect.
I have no problems doing this.

My OH and I are going away for a few weeks. I'm bringing my bike.
I was thinking of buying an iPad 3, and using it, while on holidays
    to download my cycle spins.
Now, There is no USB port on the iPad.
I have been told in the computer shop, that there is no way to get the information from my Garmin to the iPad.
I have checked online. On a couple of forums, people seem to have been able to get round this problem in 2 ways:
    1) by using something called a "Jailbreak", which I don't understand and
    which sounds illegal.
    2) By using a "Dongle", which I don't understand and which sounds
    nasty.

Can anybody, who understands, what I'm trying to say, help. Please!

P.S. I am an old man, my brain is tired and I'm way out of my comfort zone here. I don't understand computers, so be gentle with me.

Jailbreak will unlock your ipad, and will let you do install software that is not allowed by apple and their itunes

You need dongle to connect any USB device to ipad. Like lets say memory sd card. Since Garmin when connected to usb acts the same way as memory card, you need one to copy data into my connect.

Download strava app and use phone to track rides?
Just leave data off and gps on and away you go.
Upload at house/hotel wifi if data usage a problem away from home

    Eamonnator,

I have on my desk an unused Wahoo Fitness dongle. This may do what you want. Or not, since I've never used it.

    You want it?

You can get a "camera kit" for the iPad which had a usb/sd card reader, but I don't think it will recognise the Garmin to import the data.

Just leave all your data on the 500, upload when you get home and joy in how many km's and KoM's you achieved.

Thank you all very much for your replies.

@t'bear. I was thinking of doing this, but I will be doing about 15 spins,
average about 70K per spin. Will the 500 hold all that information?

@2 Wheels good. The assistant said this wouldn't work, because the iPad "thinks" the Garmin is drawing too much power and won't play with it.

@ford2600. I want to use my Garmin 500, because I know how to get the information to GarminConnect from it. I don't know how to do that from my phone.

@twinsen. Thank you.Re Jailbreak, I'm sure warranty would be void if I did this?

@Lumen. I think, this may be, what I need. Somebody on another forum seems to have success with that very device. So yes I want it, please. How much?.

The Edge 500 will hold 180 hours worth of rides, so you have plenty capacity.

Borrow it, see how you get on. I don't even know if it works!

    Will PM details.

The 500 will hold all those spins without a problem. It holds 180 hours of data.

I'm not sure the dongle does what you want. It allows a fitness app on an iphone to access HRM/Cadence etc as far as I can see. I don't think it can import data from the Edge itself.

I'm think, I'm going to go with Dermot Illogical and jinkypolly.
It doesn't matter to me, when I download my spins, as long as I can download at some stage.

So, once again thank you all very much for your input.
I think, I'll go for a little lie down now.

I was using my Garmin 500 last year in same multiple-spins-now-save-later mode when it started to act up and didn't correctly save a spin. The solution was to reset the unit at the end of each spin before powering it off by holding down the Lap/Reset button for 3 seconds. This makes sure the ride is correctly saved.
