Dental Implant Advice

So it looks like I may need either a dental implant / bridge / crown (2nd premolar). From reading threads on this forum I'm leaning towards an implant. I have a consultation later with my regular dentist to go through the detailed pros and cons.

In advance of that I'm looking for some advice on questions I should ask. Does anyone have a handy list?

The dentist in question is based in a well known chain in Cork, I have used them for the past 4 years for the usual checkups / cleaning and fillings and I am happy with the service and pricing structure. However, performing an implant procedure is in a different league and my dentist is quite young so I want to make sure the person performing the procedure has the requisite qualifications and experience. What should I look out for in this regard?

Also, if you have had positive experience with getting an implant could someone recommend a specialist/v. experienced dentist in Cork (by PM obviously). I'd value getting the most professional / technically advanced procedure done over cost.

    Thanks in advance.

Is the implant surgeon an oral surgeon or periodontist?
Is the restoring dentist a prosthodontist, not necessary but nice...
Reputable implant brand, there are many...
Do they anticipate bone grafting? ie is the bone quantity good?
Does your maxillary sinus come close to the implant site and what do they propose for that, place a shorter implant/ internal or external sinus lift...?
will the implant be placed at the time of the extraction (if a tooth or root is present at the moment)?
Do you need a temporary? and what type, essix, denture, resin bonded bridge, temporary on the new implant (not always possible)

Proposed treatment duration (implant healing time, plus uncovering of implant, plus lab time to make the crown, plus a few tweaks...)

Will they place the implant under local anaesthetic or iv sedation......

Thanks for the reply O.S. very useful information. Luckily the decay wasn't as bad as expected. She said a filling will last for another year or so and that it looks like a root canal / post / crown job in the medium term. Will keep your info for future ref, hopefully I won't need it though:)

OK but just be aware that having a compromised tooth in the future implant site is a bit of a ticking time bomb... If you get an infection, it will blow a hole in the valuable bone of if the root fractures, it can do the same.....

The first sign of any discomfort with the tooth, get it seen to.....

Yeah, in fairness the dentist said that to me. Good to have the message reinforced though. Thanks again
