Oil overfill Diesel Engine

    What are the implications here?

Is a slight overfill ever ok?

Or is the best to always be at the halfway mark on the dipstick?

Or is just above the low mark the best?

    Anyone?

What is the acid test. Should a man not worry about this issue unless there is

    visable foaming,
    or smoke from the exhaust,
or something unusual about the oil colour
    or something else

basically what's the bottom line; if there is an overfill will you get a nasty surprise very quickly, or will there be signs?

On a separate note, how do you check to make sure no diesel, water or contaminate is in your oil? What should you be keeping an eye out for?

Friend had oil change 700 miles ago. I think it's overfilled; but it's driving grand, no slug, no stalling, no smoke.

    So... no problem?

Depending on how much, runaway diesel is possible

Sorry, to finish... should this car not have consumed some oil by now seeing that we are 700 miles down the line... possibly something is getting mixed with the oil?

I was thinking if it was madly overfilled he'd have definitely have had a problem by now, so it was likely not overfilled madly.

It's either one of two things.

It was slightly overfilled and we are ok.

Or it wasn't overfilled at all, and something is now beginning to contaminate it/fill it to overflow

I wouldn't like driving one of those with too much oil in it, especially a pre 2007 M47 engine. How much of an over-fill are we talking about here? How many mm of oil above the max?

    Quarter inch maybe..

Driving away 700 miles since oil change

I wouldn't want to be just below the low mark anyway, to be fair it's known as minimum or low for a reason presumably :)

Most dipsticks I've seen have about an inch from low to high, so 1/4 of an inch over high is way over filled.

OP you need to check on a BMW forum to see if that much over is OK or else call a main dealer and ask, as they'll definitely know.
