CFFL to LED conversion

I've come across this a second time where I've had to replace a screen in a laptop only to find that the replacement screen is an older type that requires a screen that hooks into an inverter. Because these screens are obsolete, they can be quite hard to find, are usually quite expensive and, in many cases a substitute LED screen is offered with a conversion kit that bypasses the inverter.

I was wondering if anyone here has ever used this kit and what their experiences have been. In the most recent case, I ordered the exact, original screen only to be told after placing the order that the screen was not available and that they could send a converted screen. I agreed to take it, fitted the screen and the laptop never turned on. Basically, I believe that the board is somehow fried. It could just be that I wasn't grounded when I was performed the installation or the screen wasn't compatible. The laptop in question is a CQ61.
I've also done the conversion on a 16 inch Acer, which worked away fine for about six months and then came back with an intermittent fault. The laptop turns on fine and works perfectly on an external screen. The built in screen glows greyish but nothing ever appears on the screen. I removed the graphics card, re did the thermal and the screen came on....for ten minutes and hasn't come on since. I'm not too sure if it's a graphics card issue (since it works on an external screen) or if somehow the conversion is at fault.

I would be interested to know your thoughts...
