I have my bike selection down to two.

Planet X Pro Carbon SRAM Rival or Caynon Road Light AL. Roughly the same price.

Main use would be a summer bike for sportives and summer spins.

What are the main differences between materials? From a groupset point of view they are comparable.

I have a roadlite 7. I had an impression at the time that a good quality alu bike was better for general use ( and for possible entry level racing ) than a carbon bike at the same price.

I think the Canyon is probably better value. You get a higher spec of components - full Ultegra and Askiums.

You need to look closely at what you get with Planet X bikes. It's advertised as Rival but it doesn't come with a Rival chainset and has Sram MTB spec gear with the chain and cassette. Looks like the wheels it comes with are of a lower spec than even the Askiums, though only slightly.

I bought an SL Pro carbon in mid/late 2011 and have about 10,000km on it. Personally I find it very comfortable to spend the day on. Have done everything on it, sportives, trained, raced and it has preformed admirably. Absolutely nothing wrong with it as an entry level bike to start racing on.
