I had someone in laying drainage pipes in my garden and they made a mess of it on me. They laid the pipes ok but when they were digging he never scrapped the top soil of to use spread again when finished laying pipes. Now im left with my garden full of stones.

Ive been raking it for 3 days but still getting nowhere so im thinking of getting some top soil out just to skim over the top so i can lay some grass seed.

The area is 20x15m and im wanting to know how much top soil woul get awau with and how much woul a load be.

Its a back garden so i think id have to get it delivered ina 7.5 ton lorry or there abouts because i wouldnt be able to get a large lorry around the there.

At 4" you'd be looking at 60 tonne or 3 good loads. In most places topsoil is scarce and expensive at the mo' as no site clearing going on.

Actually the price is totally the opposite about here. A lorry load of screened topsoil from our local quarry id down to €170 a load.

I hope you did not pay him. It is often important to be your own Clerk of Works

You may be able to hire a small self propelled stone rake they are a bit bigger than a rotovator, some small landscapers have them. One of these would rake the stones into heaps to be removed.

Have never heard of them but thanks for the suggestion. Would the ground have to be wetish for it to work properly. At the moment its really dry.

Ive also been quoted 120€ for a dumptrailor load but dont know how much is in this. Im thinking 10ton but thats a guess. Was talking to another guy earlier and hes told me that i should only pay 10euro max for 1 Ton if im buying over 10 ton. If this is the case then ill buy 15 ton and see how i get on with that

Do you have good topsoil at the moment, or has the drainage guy mixed up all the subsoil with the topsoil? Would it be worth getting a contractor to come in with one of those small stone burier rotavators? they can do a very good job. You would be sick if you bought a few lorryloads of soil that was as stony as what you have!

Whereabouts are you located? I know a guy here in Cavan had one, think he still has it. Worked it behind a ford 4000. Its just a rotavator which rotates in an upwards cutting direction. There is a screen behind the rotor through which the soil flies (must be dry) but which the stones cannot pass. result is that the stones all fall down behind the rotor, and then the soil covers the stone layer. I saw his working, and it left a good finish.

Thats what i was thinking. Ill try and get a pic of it later so yous can tell me if its bad or not.

Yeah the drainage guy mixed all thr sub soil in with thr top soil. All he done was dig his trenches, big trenches and mixed everything underneath in with the topsoil.

Im afraid of hiring this out and it just making the job worse and bring more stones to the surface.

Anyone know how much a stone rotavtor would be to hire for a day.
