Simon Coveney gave details of micro chipping scheme for all dogs from pup stage, he included greyhounds in his speech.
Another great money spinner, considering a man with 30 Fox hounds could have a bill of €750.

Wasn't he going to try to get vets to do it at cost of a total of €7.50 per dog?

More unenforceable laws and EU diktats!
We cant even get our ethnic minority of travellers to microchip and passport their nags and piebald ponies. How do they expect to enforce this on dogs???

I didn't hear a figure of €7.50 mentioned, just had heard it was €25 per dog before.

He mentioned it when talking about the measure in the Dail today (I was listening after all the hullaballoo about the Animal Welfare bill from the usual suspects).

That coalition is going to fall asunder like a chinese motorcycle shorty by the looks of it, so any announcements aren't worth the paper they are printed on.

I'd be all for this - anything that might go some way to reducing the amount of dogs being stolen is a good thing in my opinion.

I heard some pounds are doing it for €5. I have most of mine done.

If it comes in at a reasonable or no cost this is actually a good idea. It will help with stolen dogs and hopefully put a stop to the practice of dumping unwanted dogs.
However we need to ensure that the procedure and cost of updating ownership details are streamlined. It's a lot of hassle to do this at the moment when pups are chipped and registered by the breeder. You have to go back to the breeder to have them update the data.

If this comes into being it will also be interesting as it will put an onus on people breeding/selling pups to ensure the ownership is transferred once a pup is sold. How will this fair out if you want to sell a dog without papers? Is there going to be an independent database for registering ownership or will the IKC and the likes take ownership!? Even if it comes into being it will never be properly enforced.... the dog wardens can hardly enforce dog licensing properly never mind this as well!

As far as I know it's not administered by the Kennel Club, I think there are two other organisations doing it. So it doesn't matter whether the dog is a Pedigree or a Heinz!

No doubt they will set up a quango to run it.......interesting to see who they put in charge of overseeing it.
